Re: Get your Pi to fight COVID-19

OTOH, I've just set up a Ryzen Threadripper 3960X 24-Core 3.9GHz, which is fairly much cutting edge. A cutting edge GPU is 5-6 times more productive. I'm also impressed, for example, even with the first generation Threadripper CPUs such as the 12-core 1920X. Are you running Linux or a Microsoft ope...

Re: 160 Watt 4 ohm speaker with pi zero

A Pi will not drive a 4Ω speaker directly. So you need an amplifier (at least, possibly an alternative DAC as well). The power rating of the amplifier specifies its maximum output. The speaker power rating specifies its maximum input. So as long as the speaker can cope with all that the amp can prod...

Re: Get your Pi to fight COVID-19

I can use my Raspberry Pi with Raspbian Buster to monitor Folding@home on my Windows 10 computer. Would it be possible to run Folding at Home using x86 emulation on a Pi? Is qemu the obvious choice? Has anyone tried this? How's the performance? It would be interesting to try, but I suspect fairly p...

Plastic standoffs should be more than adequate unless you have extreme vibrations or mechanics shocks. They are widely used commercially.

Re: One power plug to rule them all?

Hi Emma! I'm a cautious bugger, and am willing to spend $ in the name of safety or robustness. Would there be no advantage at all to using the dc-dc converters to bring things close to what the relay and pumps expect, or is it just plain old wasteful? I do indeed have several things plugged in, hum...

Re: Get your Pi to fight COVID-19

For a project on a similar subject, that uses both CPUs (but not ARM) and GPUs, see Folding at Home . Incidentally this may be a more powerful DC project than any single supercomputer -- its actual power is difficult to determine as there are problems counting active hardware when some of it runs on...

any idea how much power can a Pi put out it's GPIO. cause if it's under 5W there is no restrictions on transmitting in the FM band.
Caution to others reading this: Laws in other areas (specifically UK and Europe) may not permit 5W FM transmitters.

Since those damaged parts are right next to the usb power port, is there any chance that powering the Pi from the 5v GPIO pon would bypass that?
No.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade @topguy has described the main problem. Note also that the recommended update/upgrade procedure is: sudo apt update sudo apt full-upgrade The differences are subtle but real. "apt" is better suited to interactive use than "apt-get", "full-upgrade" is...

Re: Rpi4: need help identifying power components

Yes I saw the 4.4A, although I didn't put too much emphasis on that. Is that a max current spec that has something to do with the saturation of the ferrite? 4.4 A seems quite a bit though... if it's powering the ram only then how can it expect a current of more than 1A? At 1.1v that would mean over...

Something is definitely not well, even if not quite dead. I can think of three possibilities: The power strip (or one outlet on it) The power supply (or the connected cable) The Pi OR, if you are really unlucky, some combination of the above (which gives another four possibilities, plus the variants...

Isn't a 555 a timer? Wouldn't a comparator (or op-amp wired as such) be easier? Try LM324 or many others, but not 555.  Can be. A 555 is only a timer when you put it in a suitable circuit with capacitor, resistor and perhaps feedback. A 555 is very versatile. It contains: 1) A comparato...
