Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.4

Stack protection is a compiler feature that helps to guard against buffer overflows. SMP stands for Symmetric Multi Processing, which you can think of as support for multi-core platforms (which BCM2836, BCM2837 and BCM2711 are, but BCM2835 isn't). The commit is saying that the old way of doing stac...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.4

The problem is triggered by the following commit, introduced in the 5.2 kernel: [ https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?h=v5.6&id=189af4657186da08a2e79fb8e906cfd82b2ccddc ] commit 189af4657186da08a2e79fb8e906cfd82b2ccddc Author: Ard Biesheuvel <ard.[email protected]...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.4

@MrEngman I don't think this is simple finger trouble - it looks more like a difference in compiler versions having an affect on builds of newer kernels. I'll report back soon with the results of some tests. Thanks. Just for info I compile my drivers on a Pi 3B+ using gcc (Raspbian 4.9.3-14) 4.9.3 ...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.4

Surely it shouldn't be a problem getting it fixed, should it? Suggestions for the fix are welcome. Well, when I do a full compile of the kernel for kernel versions -7+ and -7l+ the Module.symvers file that is generated includes the value __stack_chk_guard that is missing from the Module7(7l).symver...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.4

@PhilE, @Dom, Seems I'm not the only one having issues with the faulty Module7(7l).symvers files in the 5.4 kernel. Surely it shouldn't be a problem getting it fixed, should it? The gamecon drivers fail to install with this new kernel. I did update to the "latest" 5.4. Installed the kernel headers w...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.4

With reference to my earlier post https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=269769&start=25#p1637260 after much hunting about it seems the wifi drivers failing to compile are down to invalid Module.symvers files for kernels 5.4.29-v7+ and 5.4.29-v7l+. Rather than preparing the kernel s...

Re: Moving Linux Kernel to 5.4

With a compiled kernel 5.4 now available I decided it was time to checkout the wifi drivers I compile. I have found an odd error that I can't understand. Drivers for kernel versions 5.4.29+ and 5.4.29-v8+ compile OK other than a few warnings that I would like to sort out. However, compiling the wifi...

There is this post https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=62371 MrEngman You should probably update that old thread with details of where your script lives now. I didn't know you'd moved it and updated it (I keep my copy on a filesystem that's shared between all Raspberries so I do...

Just though I would checkout connecting to an access point with hidden ssid to check the necessary changes required to the wpa_supplicant.conf file. I've just set up a temporary access point with a hidden ssid and modified the wpa_supplicant.conf file on my Pi 4B. Rebooted the Pi 4B and it is now co...

Thanks for this suggestion. I am not familiar with 'hidden' access points but I will investigated. I have several other devices on my WiFi Network which work well.

BTW - is Access Point & SSID one & the same ?

DonMI
I would expect it to be.

Re: Pi B - no WiFi - ever!

Still floundering..... tried full reinstall with a WiFi USB dongle in place . Again the Raspbian install was good. In the post-install config phase AGAIN!! no WiFi network detected/reported. This sort-of mitigates a bad on-board WiFi fault. Out of ideas. Hi DonMI, In a couple of your earlier posts ...

I changed the web address quite a long time ago, try these commands:-

sudo wget http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi-drivers/install-wifi -O /usr/bin/install-wifi
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/install-wifi

Re: RPi4 using WiFi only if Ethernet connection missing?

I have several Pi which have ethernet cable and wifi enable and both get connected when they boot. What you could try is when your Pi boots run a script that checks command ifconfig eth0 to see if a network address is active and if it is turn off your wifi using a command like sudo ip link set wlan0...

MrEngman Your install script worked flawlessly for me, once I found it. I wanted to ask if I could add your script to an 3D Printing Raspbian based image called https://github.com/guysoft/OctoPi It would make setting up non-supported wifi dongles super simple for their users. In order to be able to...
