@bob0711: Apart from forgetting to capitalise the first letter and accidentally missing out the word "would" in one place, paddyg's English is absolutely fine. Maybe if you'd been taught English at school rather than something masquerading as English, you might have understood him better.

Re: Locking issues/Refund.

In my opinion the power design of the pi is entirely flawed from several angles. In what way? It relies on being fed a supply voltage that lies within the limits specified for USB 2.0 compliancy (5V +/-0.25V). The fact that many USB PSUs and chargers rated at or above the Pi's current requirements ...

Re: Testing for sound?

Glad the video side is sorted. :) Did we have an 'hdmi_drive=2' entry in there? If so, try changing it to 'hdmi_drive=1'. If that fails then you'll need to read through the links the other guys gave as I think they go into more detail on what else might need tweaking. I'm confused as to whether a se...

Re: Transistor for IR Transmitter

I wouldn't follow that schematic if I were you. Directly connecting the base-emitter junction of a bipolar transistor between a GPIO output pin and ground looks like a fairly foolish thing to be doing in my opinion. I'm happy to be corrected if wrong.

Re: How to connect Speaker to Pi ?

If either of them are going to pull more than 16mA from a GPIO pin then you're risking damaging or killing your Pi. Don't connect either unless you know what you're doing.

Re: Testing for sound?

Purely a guess here re the screen blanking problem, but I'm wondering if the Pi would be happier running the monitor at a 60Hz refresh rate instead of 75Hz. The monitor in question should support both. You could try changing 'hdmi_mode=18' to 'hdmi_mode=16' in your config.txt file to see if it fixes...

I've nothing to add other than that the method you used does work. I can't imagine why it didn't work for you unless you were trying to power it directly from a USB port that couldn't supply enough current.

It's probably fine. It's just that something I've installed at one time or another has blown my warranty bit which I didn't find out until some time later, so I prefer to overclock manually so I know what's actually being changed.

Re: USB install help

The version of RaspBMC from here is an image file and needs placing on the card with Win32DiskImager to work, the version from the RaspBMC website just needs copying across to the card then runs its own custom installer. Overclocking via the in-app menu should be OK as far as your warranty goes, but...

Re: Testing for sound?

If this is the VGA monitor we configured very recently, I think my settings send the sound via the HDMI-VGA converter, so your audio interconnecting lead probably needs to go from the 'audio out' on the converter (assuming it has one) to the monitor.

Re: USB install help

Wanted to try and install onto usb 8GB flash drive as heard make raspbmc faster. Putting it onto a USB stick probably won't make much difference. The easiest way to make RaspBMC feel more snappy is to overclock your Pi. There are options in the dedicated RaspBMC Settings program to do just that. ht...

Re: substitution sd card to usb

It's a mains-powered 3.5" caddy, so no need for a powered USB hub. The internal power supply board is capable of delivering 1.5A at 5V though, and the drive that's in it only takes around 250mA from the 5V rail, so the plan is to do away with the separate Pi power supply and power it from the caddy'...

Re: substitution sd card to usb

I've gone uber-skinflint on mine and use an old unrated Sandisk 1GB microSD card to boot from that's too small/slow to be of much use for anything else. The OSes live on a USB-HDD that used to spend most of its life switched off and doing nothing as it was originally used just for backups. It may be...

Re: Looking for USB sound stick with Amp

Also, a Pi wouldn't be able to provide the necessary power from its USB port to drive amplifiers capable of driving loudspeakers directly with any real volume, so you'd have to run the USB sound card from a powered USB hub. As above, powered speakers would be the simplest answer.

Nice find! And to think that some people still have the cheek to complain about the Pi being a rip-off because of the vast sums of money you have to spend on the leads that aren't included. :D

That's according to the 'auto-fill' data for the device which is often woefully inaccurate on eBay. You could try rotating the camera through 180° and see if the defocussed areas also rotate by 180°. That would tell you whether it's dust/dirt on the lens/sensor, or whether something odd was going on in software... maybe. :P
