Re: Backup SD card to .IMG file

I backup with this script: tar -zcf - / | ssh jiml@192.168.2.33 "cat >/mnt/sda1/raspberrypi.bak.tgz" This backs up my pi to a location on another computer on the network. Set up SSH keys to avoid password prompts, and this is easily automated, resulting in a compressed copy on the other machine. Do...

Re: Backup SD card to .IMG file

I used an Ubuntu server I have as the file store.
Just had to install NFS server and then it worked like magic using an nfs share! :D
Much easier to install and configure than samba....

It might have been a one-time fluke....
Right now wherever I check it works as it should.
And I am talking about a command typed in on the terminal prompt..

Re: How to enable the time command on Raspbian

What shell are you using? How can i find out? I am just issuing the command I want to time in a PuTTY session window into the RPi. Such command can be gzip of a RPi image file: time gzip newbackup.img where the newbackup.img file is 10 GB or so in size (takes more than 30 min on the RPi3) or inside...

How to enable the time command on Raspbian

I want to time a command that may run for upwards of an hour and I have done so many times using the 'time' command: time command arguments When command has finished it outputs the total execution time. But now when I want to time the creation of a backup image file on my RPi3 it cannot find time......

Re: Backup SD card to .IMG file

Concerning the target for the img file: I have failed to use an NTFS hard drive directly connected by USB as the target for the output img file. But I have succeeded in using an SDcard in an USB carrier directly inserted into the RPi after reformatting it as ext4. Now I am facing a problem wh...

Re: Getting error about freedesktop when using subversion on Pi-OS

Turns out that svn expects that gnome shall cache the passwords...
After I did this

Code: Select all

sudo apt install gnome-keyring
there were no longer any such error messages, instead a dialog popped up where I could save the password and create a master cache of passwords.
Case closed.

Getting error about freedesktop when using subversion on Pi-OS

I have an RPi3B which I am repurposing for prototyping purposes. So I installed Pi-OS this week and set up the other software including subversion. I used the GUI image without the extra software I don't use anyway. The RPi3 is headless so I access it via VNC all the time (and PuTTY too of course) N...

Re: Need to create Pi image to send to user

FOLLOW-UP Today I created a data only SDcard using gparted in Pi-OS. It is this I will use to host the image file from the RPi. I have also made a lot of installations on the RPi3 such that it will be a lot bigger this time. The RPi3 SDcard is 32 GB in size. Here are my results from a cycle: pi@rpi...

Re: Need to create Pi image to send to user

No more space on the backup sd? After patching the imgclone repo , I've run it to create a backup of my ssd onto a nfs mount and it worked without any issues. LE. My PR has been merged. I don't think it is a space problem, it could be the SDcard USB carrier (a Canakit microsd reader) that is acting...

Re: Need to create Pi image to send to user

So I did the following: - Put an SDcard that holds an RPi image in a USB carrier and inserted it - Then examined the state using lsblk and found the card registered as sdb with the root at sdb2 (ext4 filesystem) - Mounted sdb2 as /mnt/nasdisk - Navigated to /mnt/nasdisk/ and created a new dir (with ...

Re: Need to create Pi image to send to user

Did a test using an USB disk I had available. It is a 500 GB NTFS drive with half of the space free. So I mounted it into /mnt/nasdisk and ran the following commands: $ sudo su # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/nasdisk # time imgclone -d /mnt/nasdisk/RPI/testimg.img After 40 seconds it finished, but there were...

Backup SD card to .IMG file PERFECT! :D :D :D Seems like it is all that I need, except I have to compress the final image file, not a big deal. Re: Backup SD card to .IMG file

With the piclone program that comes with the standard installation of the Raspberry Pi OS you can create a backup of your SD card to a second SD card while it's active. Now I've modified this program a little bit so it will create backups to an image (.img) file on an external USB drive or shared n...

I can confirm that disabling on-board serial doesn't affect anything so I would say your analysis is correct.
Does this affect weather the serial port on the GPIO connector is available or not?

Re: New Pi-OS install on RPi3B, USB serial ports missing!

As would having some sort of pop-up or warning that the Pi needs to be re-booted. Some sort of notification that things may be in an indeterminate state with mismatches between modules and kernel. That would be really good! On my Ubuntu servers that is what happens ever so often since I am doing ap...

Re: New Pi-OS install on RPi3B, USB serial ports missing!

I found the reason which I believe was not there in previous operating system images: The use of the serial ports (even USB connected) needs to be enabled in raspi-config! So I made these notes in my project setup instructions (Readme.md): First of all the use of the serial port needs to be enabled ...

New Pi-OS install on RPi3B, USB serial ports missing!

Contrary to how Raspbian has worked for me on numerous RPi installations over many years I have run into a problem concerning USB-Serial converters which I use a lot to communicate with multiple RS232 devices from my RPi units. This is an RPi3B on which I have done a test using a new blank SDcard an...

Re: Need to create Pi image to send to user

Thanks for the link! Given that this is a shellscript, could it also run on an RPi4? You say you use the windsk32imager program on Windows to create the initial (too big) image file, is this a typo so it should really be Win32DiskImager you use? In that case I have previously used that but found it ...

Need to create Pi image to send to user

I am setting up an RPi3 using the latest Pi-OS (previously Raspbian) so it can be used in a prototyping environment at a site a long ways away from here. The plan is to configure an Rpi3 here fully for the job that needs to be done and then create an image file of the SDcard, which is as small as po...

Performing an action after a file is written to a directory on RPi4?

I would like to know if it is possible to run a script whenever a new file gets written to a directory? Ideally the script should run say a couple of minutes following the writing of the file and if multiple files have been written during that time the script should only run once. Is that possible o...

I don't have a monitor for my RPi units, I do all work on them either using PuTTY to the command line or VNC to the GUI (configured via PuTTY). So I nee...

Re: Error while doing apt upgrade on RPi3, why?

I get it, but it's slightly irritating. OTOH, I don't tend to use Pis for that sort of workload, so a periodic reinstall is acceptable to me. I'll probably do an upgrade first to see if it works, and rollback if it doesn't, though. Can you tell me how you intend to do a rollback? Only thing I can t...
