I suggest you get one of those el cheapo webcams that spit hardware based M-JPEG stream. (like a Logitech C250) Then you don't have about converting YUYV to JPEG, but focus on the h264 RTP stream instead.

Try sudo apt-cache search "search-tag". Replace search-tag with what you want to search about.

You're right.

It worked when I retried after like 2 hours:

Setting up libgpm2:armhf (1.20.4-4) ...
Setting up vim-common (2:7.3.547-1) ...
Setting up vim-runtime (2:7.3.547-1) ...
Processing /usr/share/vim/addons/doc
Setting up vim (2:7.3.547-1) ...

apt-get install vim throws the following error.

vim : Depends: vim-runtime (= 2:7.3.429-2) but 2:7.3.547-1 is to be installed.

Obviously it looks like the installer is dealing with a newer version of vim-runtime; where as vim expects an older one.

Any advice ?

rpi-update indeed fixed the issue.

It was probably an SD card driver that needed to be updated;

I was running Hexxeh's r2 image for a while without any issues. But when I tried r3, using the same SD card, I started getting lot's of "mmc0: Controller never released inhibit bit(s)" everywhere, including at the login prompt. I appreciate any help.

Sorry if this has been answered before, but why is executing apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade not enough ?

Is it because Raspbian still relying on the Linux kernel image from the R-Pi foundation ?

I beg to differ here. Once we get u-boot working with network support; then so long with swapping SD cards. In fact, you only need one SD card from that point on. This in effect would allow one to control in software which image it will load on its next boot. Or am I missing something ? May be.

mpthompson, I'm sure this will be something that many people (including myself) would want to do; and I think this question will keep on popping up in the future. I definitely would like to build an image of a minimal Raspbian system (preferably cross-compile a blob on my x86 PC), dd it to an SD car...
