Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Thread - general discussion

Can we get any more information on the expected computational capabilities and performance difference of the VC6 GPU compared to the VC4? It's about 4x faster than the VC4 (pixel rate IIRC). So you if you are running full screen 4k, then you get about the same frame rate as the older devices at 108...

Re: Why is the RPi4 being advertised as a desktop computer?

I suppose I could be described as a 'power' user, in that I write software, build kernels etc. That, some would say, requires a decent desktop computer. And yet EVERYTHING I do nowadays can be done on a Pi4. [..] So, even though this is a tiny ARM based device, I would have no problems doing my act...

Re: Users via ssh can't scan with Raspbian Buster anymore

For the record: Once a user logged-in via ssh can actually scan, he could also do real network scanning by running "simple-scan" from his own machine. For high dpi scans this is handy, since then the Pi only forwards the scanner's data and so doesn't crash with its 1 GB RAM limit. 1) On the Pi as sc...

Re: Users via ssh can't scan with Raspbian Buster anymore

/lib/udev/rules.d/* have changed between stretch and buster. [..] Nevertheless, my proposed local fix is to take one line from stretch and put it in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-libsane-group.rules: ENV{libsane_matched}=="yes", RUN+="/bin/setfacl -m g:scanner:rw $env{DEVNAME}" Well, that's it! This line, p...

Re: Users via ssh can't scan with Raspbian Buster anymore

Are the "local" users and the "ssh" users the same users or two completely separated set of users.?? Same user name with same user id on the Pi and on the Linux machines from which I ssh-connect to the Pi. And with "local" users you mean users that log into the desktop on a monitor physically conne...

Re: New graphics driver: does it work on older Pi's?

Thanks 6by9 for the informative explanation. A relatively simple test case is glxgears -fullscreen from the mesa-utils package. Despite glxinfo showing the 3d renderer is active and with virtually no CPU load during the animation because of VC6 doing the work (without HW acceleration all four cores ...

Re: Users via ssh can't scan with Raspbian Buster anymore

Thanks for your reply. Please note that local users even without admin-rights can on my Pi use "sane-find-scanner" and the GUI application "simple-scan", i.e. everything needed. So there's no general problem with access rights but "only" with external ssh users not being allowed to use the local sca...

Re: New graphics driver: does it work on older Pi's?

It works on the Pi3, but is visibly slower with Raspbian Buster than it used to be with Raspbian Stretch, when it comes to OpenGL applications like Hatari, MAME, etc. For example on Hatari it's a 20% slow-down, meaning compared to Stretch there's now frame skips and the emulated sound isn't in sync ...

Users via ssh can't scan with Raspbian Buster anymore

Good day, On my Pi3 I upgraded from Raspbian Stretch to Raspbian Buster via a fresh install, like the forum's experts recommended. And basically most things work fine. With Raspbian Stretch my LAN users who logged-in to my Pi via ssh could use the Canon scanner connected to it. I just had to add the...

Will this also work for 3B+? Yes, it should work, although I can only test it on my normal Pi 3B (BCM2837). When I open the fat32 partition, there are amongst other files: system-boot/bcm2710-rpi-3-b.dtb system-boot/bcm2710-rpi-3-b-plus.dtb system-boot/bcm2837-rpi-3-b.dtb Well done, Ubuntu develope...

Re: RISC-V

a) Instruction set diversity is a disaster. That implies a plethora of incompatible systems and a lot of work building tools for them all and porting software around, etc. That is why the modern world only has two instruction sets: Intel on PC and server, ARM on mobile and embedded. Also the server...

Re: Raspberry pi 4 - x64 Processor ?

the answer is that x86, like it or not, is the standard Linux, and there are lots of software that is released as binary-only for x86. What could this x86 "binary-only" software be on Linux? I'm asking since I'm only using Linux machines (on ARM, x86, PPC, …) at my job and at home, and I'm really k...

Re: Raspberry pi 4 - x64 Processor ?

I cannot see us ever going x86. Happy to hear this. Also we're happy about how smooth Linux runs on an ARM platform like the Pi. The Pi's unique ARM based hardware combined with the fine Linux makes this little device so valuable. And Davids, we used the good old Acorn Archimedes für many years, so...

Re: Raspbian Stretch VLC not working for second user

The newest VLC uses hardware acceleration indeed, which is great. The command line program omxplayer which also uses hardware acceleration, needs a user to be in the group "video" before he can use omxplayer and other applications which use the Videocore hardware. Like: adduser newuser video I think...

Re: Installing Ubuntu-Mate to Raspberry Pi 1

Can anyone help me installing Ubuntu-Mate on my RBPi 1 Ubuntu compiles their 32-Bit ARM packages against ARM7, so it won't run on a Pi1 with ARM6. At least you need a Pi2 with ARM7 or a Pi3 with ARM8 to run ARM Ubuntu. P.S. And you won't have the OpenGL driver and other Raspbian-only bits, like har...

AFAIK Mate needs a 2B or later.
[Edit: Yes indeed.]

The Ubuntu Mate flavour also bundles a ready-to-run image for the Pi, using Raspbian's kernel plus some driver and Ubuntu's normal 32-Bit ARM7 packages from the Ubuntu server.

Re: Is it possible to respond to a thread without bumping it?

It is especially frustrating when one responds to a long dead thread with updated information and the mods complain. I feel it is better to bring the information up to date than let someone googling find the wrong out of date information, thus responding to very old threads is often a very good thi...

I solved the problem. Here's the settings how to run MAME+MESS in a hardware accelerated window or in full-screen, so that many MAME programs run perfectly with 0 frame-skips, and more demanding ones skip some frames but are still well useable. MAME's speed doesn't depend on the window size anymore ...

Throttling seems to work fine here: with CPU load vcgencmd says 1200 MHz, whilst in CPU idle mode it says 600 MHz.
