Re: How to run Freespace 2 Open on Raspberry PI 3

Updated the instructions today, i forked the source to make some changes for mods to work.

Added Wing Commander Saga, a standalone free game that can be played with Freespace 2 engine.

Re: How to run Freespace 2 Open on Raspberry PI 3

Ok, you cant run in fullscreen in Buster, the focus loss is constant. BUT you can run in a window whiout having constant "pauses". This is done by selecting "dont grab mouse/keyboard in a window" under "Dev Tool" in wxlauncher. The keyboard and mouse grab seems to be responsible for the focus loss a...

Re: How to run Freespace 2 Open on Raspberry PI 3

Im more interested in getting S3TC working, as that opens up the possibility of running free standalone mods, and figureout whats wrong with debian buster. Raspberry PI 3 users can still run the game on Stretch whiout issues. BTW, i expect FS2 Open to move to Vulkan in the future, if RPI4 gets Vulka...

Re: How to run Freespace 2 Open on Raspberry PI 3

Ok after re testing with RPI 4... its the same so far. 3.7.2 - Works but it now has this weird issue with the game minimizing or pausing if ran in a window. 3.7.4 - Works but not hardware accelerated, seems to be running on software. It also has the same issues as 3.7.2 3.8.0 and Newer - Fails to la...

Root partition is on SSD, but how to expand it?

What i did to boot from a USB SSD is to use win32 disk imager to burn the debian rpi image to an SD card and the SSD, then i deleted the root partition from the sd card, since the UUID are the same this results in a boot from the SSD whiout having to do anything else. But the root patition is 6GB an...

Re: How to run Freespace 2 Open on Raspberry PI 3

I thought S3TC was designed for GPU hardware decompression. As far as I know S3TC was not in the Videocore IV and probably not the VI. Worse-case scenario it can be done on software. I could also extract the texture from the mod files and uncompress it, but i never managed to get it to work properly.

Re: How to run Freespace 2 Open on Raspberry PI 3

No, i never managed to workaround it... newer Mesa and Drivers are the only way to go. BTW, gog is giving away Freespace 2 for free for 48hs, this is a good chance to pick it up in case someone that dosent have and want to play on RPI https://www.gog.com/game/freespace_2 The retail campaign should b...

Re: How to run Freespace 2 Open on Raspberry PI 3

The problem of running newer versions of fs2open is the minimum OPENGL version they need... thats something that may be fixed with newer Stretch versions or in the RPI4.

This was also the reason of why i was unable to run mods, because i needed S3TC support, and i never made it to work.

This is easy, faster CPU means nothing whiout faster GPU, faster CPU/GPU means nothing whiout more RAM, more RAM means nothing whiout faster CPU/GPU, faster CPU/GPU/More RAM means nothing whiout faster I/O... You petty much need all 4 in RPI4. So if you ask me im seeing a 2GB, Quad-Core A55, with VC...

Re: Enabling S3TC texture compresion?

But even if the hardware does not support it you should be able to run software S3TC, while slower thats better than nothing and needing it. Also is possible to use an external lib like this one, if mesa is configured properly at build. https://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/S3TC/ But here is the thing, u...

Back on June 27th I complained about the Gentoo64 Mesa gear demo being jerky when the window was made bigger. Not anymore, full screen is runs smooth and only drops down to 55fps. Terrain demo also works full screen and around 50fps :D Time to test some OpenGL games? So is Kivy still a problem? Wel...

Enabling S3TC texture compresion?

Ok ive been trying to make Freespace 2 working on the RPI. https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=230316 Ive been successfull in running the retail game files so far, BUT in order to run anything else, like the freeware games that runs on FS2_Open it needs to have S3TC texture compr...

Re: M.2 on Raspberry Pi 4

Probably because with Windows 10 ARM being able to run any x86 app, having a good igp means a cheap gaming box. You really dont need a lot for esport games. Then again you do need a ton of ram for that. and from were you are going to get an ARM nvidia driver?... at any case i do think the RPI needs ...

How to run Freespace 2 Open on Raspberry PI 3

-UPDATE- Buster has some issues with the game, making it to loss focus and to pause if ran in a window on RPI3/4. Stretch on RPI3 works fine. In order to run in Buster you need to run the game in a window, no fullscreen is possible for now. -UPDATE- Updated build instructions to my git fork to enabl...

Ok ive attempted this so far. 1) Compiled Wine on Ubuntu x86 2) Compiled Qemu on R-PI with NTPL option on. 3) Copied ld-linux.so.2 and i386-linux-gnu folder from the Ubuntu x86 /lib folder to /lib on R-PI, there seems to be no conflicts with ARM stuff. 4) I try to run "qemu-i386 /home/user/wine/load...

Re: x264

The CPU always do something, its never 100% on the gpu. How much the cpu do depends on how good the gpu decoder is, also the bitrate is VERY important.

This is a test with a A10 cpu, someone need to try something similar to this with Raspi BCM.
