Something to keep in mind is that the current release of Mathematica for Raspberry Pi is referred to as a pilot release* and that this version (10) hasn't been released yet for other platforms. Raspberry Pi runs Mathematica 10. I get a different error than you, though. FindFit::fitd: First argument pun in FindFit is not a list or a rectangular array. so I don't think you posted all the relevant code. If you need support for Mathematica 9, you should go to a general Mathematica support forum.

I use X11 forwarding over ssh, but it's a fast connection. You should try it to see how it works for you.

It appears to be in raspberrypi.org's repository but not in raspbian's.

Yes, I would think running using X forwarding (tunnel) would be allowed, because it's still running on the Pi. It's just that the input is coming from a PC and the output is going there. However, this probably should be clarified by someone from Wolfram just to be safe.

Launching it in the background will return you to a shell prompt (freeing up the terminal for continued use):

$ mathematica &

(you don't type the dollar sign, of course)

I just ssh -X into my Pi. In other words, I use X forwarding. There shouldn't be any need for a virtual frame buffer or something like xvnc. Please let me know if the following doesn't work for you.
