I haven't hijacked the thread, I asked for a guide to buying, in the thread titled buyers guide. I am a total newbie to Raspberry Pi , have not purchased one yet as I don't know if I will be able to use it via my monitor until my question has an answer. I am also new to Linux. I forgot to write in my post that the monitor is a CRT (IBM E74), have you used the Farnell one with CRT monitors at the Manchester raspberry jam ?
