I got rtorrent working on the 19-04 debian image. the issue I had was that after downloading 144MB of a 700MB file, the whole thing crashed. copying from one USB device to the Pi had the same affect, but XBMC did play what little I did transfer very well. For the record, I think this happens to me whilst trying to download a rather large file from the internet (so not Samba).

I'm connecting using SSH, where the connection closes unexpectedly, and then I cannot ping the device either.

Will look to update.

my card is 8Gig. the software formatted 3 partitions as required (1 readable by windows, 2 not). the last 5.6GB is left unformatted and ready for data (music, video, python scripts etc). i will prob format this using the Pi in a format that someone will suggest.....

I seemingly had some success with the debian iso and Win32DiskImager.

Is there away of verifying what I did will be of any use with the Pi. I can see 10 file when browsing via Windows Explorer, but I doubt this is of much help?
