Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

Piclone should have some boxes on the menu for "Is this a backup for this Raspberry? [Y/N]" "Is this a copy for a different machine? [Y/N]" (obviously mutually exclusive). Maybe I wrote "should" too. I meant should in the sense of "would be useful if". Since Piclone is the Rasbian debs and on the h...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

Yeah, the Zero doesn't really work that well for this. It had stopped working after a couple days so I repowered it and sshed to it. Now I've been waiting like 10 minutes for the first map to appear. It's running nginx so I went looking for comparisons between nginx and lighttpd, found this one http...

Re: My es2gears went black

I just stumbled across this in a program I wrote 20 years ago or so, still works. Instead of using ** I did char *files[500]; It makes an array of (null) pointers, then you malloc space to assign to one when you want to use it. I had just switched from FreeBSD to OpenBSD and I managed to get Open to...

Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

Thanks, it's a possibility. Easier to just use a different wifi card. Hostname, yes, I always change those. Mostly without other tinkering that makes the hostname visible in DNS on your LAN or over wifi. On my phone I can get my Dump1090 page from my zero3 for example. ssh key, that's ssh-keygen It'...

Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

They locked up the Github conversation. I'm thinking Clonezilla might be better to use https://clonezilla.org/ but I don't know yet about what non-disk stuff it handles like UUIDs and ssh keys. It's in Debian's debs, haven't checked Raspbian's. It attempts to do what Ghost can do, it does deployment...

Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

So I answered: Well, yes, if I cloned an SD with dd I might expect that to happen. But since Piclone has the option of generating new DUIDs (or UUIDs, or whatever else you want to call them, I think they're silly), I was hoping you might add that option for this. It becomes a political problem of wh...

Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

Well, that's a drag The purpose of the SD card cloner, as the name suggests, is to completely copy the original card; to create a clone for backup purposes. This may well lead to problems if you try and run 2 Pis with identical cards on the same network, but equally it may well lead to problems if w...

Re: SPi Display Questions?

I would suggest looking at the link Paeryn posted above https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/dpi/README.md I almost never re-read documentation so I didn't know there was such a thing, You shouldn't need to bit bang except as a test. I have an old Adafruit PiTFT https://www...

Re: SPi Display Questions?

Two 40 pin headers and short length of 40 pin ribbon ... problem solved :-) Any old IDE cable is 40 pin and correct but may be too long to drive. You can cut that stuff with scissors or tin snips and put the connector back on using a vise to keep everything parallel. You can't turn it around though...

Re: SPi Display Questions?

You can get a pretty wide variety (this is from DigiKey) but I thought somebody had a double (back to back) socket. That would plug this display right onto a Pi.

Re: SPi Display Questions?

It finally came yesterday, and if they'd been clearer what they meant about the pins not being directly compatible with a Pi i might be ready for it. Instead, after a long wait (weeks), now I have to order something else and wait again. The display board has 40 pins sticking out, like a Pi has 40 pi...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

Hi ab1jx, I've just had a look back at my installation notes and I'm NOT using the internal webserver but am using lighttpd on the pi. Sorry for leading you down the garden path! Dave Oh, OK, I'm using a different fork. git clone https://github.com/mutability/dump1090.git I mostly wanted to get awa...

Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

Im sure i have come across a Pi 'How to' that details a method of specifying the mac addy to use, of course i have failed in my google-fu to find it to link .. I can only assume that if my recall is correct and such a 'fix' is Pi applicable, Then in such a case where a user specified Mac addy is ap...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

Sounds like https://github.com/mutability/dump1090/issues/196 the developer doesn't want people to use that (internal webserver) option. What version are you using? I've got v1.15-dev-334-g0ec2dd8

Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

Well, I didn't tell piclone what to copy or not, it just did everything. I wonder if the people who maintain piclone (in the Raspbian debs) should adjust it. It lives at https://github.com/raspberrypi-ui/piclone/archive/master.zip maybe I should file an issue there. I don't really like ipv6, try not...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

Hi ab1jx, If you ever do find a way of getting a system to cache the map tiles at the viewing end I would be most interested - a truly portable/isolated visual ADSB receiving station :-) Dave I haven't a clue really. There's a MapProxy which I think is in the debs. Mostly a bunch of Python stuff, I...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

Hi ab1jx , I guess running Apache will up the load when active - I must say that I just connect to dump1090_mutability's internal server (after setting openstreetmap as the map tile source- still get google artifacts though!) at ip/dump1090/gmap.html and let my desktop do the heavy lifting. I've no...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

Yeah, it's not bad. I just had some OTG adapters show up in the mail so I moved the dongle and antenna over to a ZeroW that wasn't used much. I'm running just dump1090_mutability and Apache, no FlightAware or any of that. Standard internal wifi adapter, running on one of 2 jacks on a MonoPrice 2.5 ...

Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

It seems unlikely that the DHCP server only uses 3 bytes to match an IP. Systemd has made the role of /etc/machine-id (a D-Bus thing) more prominent, perhaps your DHCP client uses that ID when it talks to the server. Of course, there are special motions to go through in case you want to re-generate...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

HI abi1jx I wouldn't worry too much about the loading on a Pi-zero - this is mine currently:- I'm using a 10Mbit enc28j60 spi ethernet adapter - note this is even fast enough to stream to the "full" SBS data to another machine running "socket3003" although I was not running piaware at the time so n...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

Good job stuffing wires. I never used SMA for much, then I discover I've got a couple right beside me, not in use. My dongles so far have MCX connectors but I have a couple cute little center loaded antennas I bought as external antennas for a Huawei cell modem that have SMA on them, adapted to some...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

[ I found that putting it on top of a metal cabinet (about a foot above) greatly improved it. I think it's moved the radiation pattern upwards a little, giving more gain over my surrounding hills where it's useful. My message rate jumped about 30% instantly when I put it there. Before that it was j...

Re: Making sense of ADS-B checksums & bitfields

I had a look, the PLUS version has the 1090 MHz filter. I think I would go without the filter, as the receiver can be used in different directions, so I start probably with a broad-range receiver. Some cell phone stuff and the "little big city" close by here, too... How do you connect your handcraf...

Re: Does cloning an SD clone the Pi's MAC address?

Interesting. I wrote the MAC address from the upstairs one on paper, brought it downstairs and compared, last part is different. So the Android DHCP server is only looking at the first (manufacturer) part of the MAC. That seems like a big security hole. And for anybody with a bunch of identical hard...
