USB Devices sometimes change path on reboot (/dev/ttyUSBX)

I have multiple USB devices in my PI, and when I reboot, sometimes their "dev" path changes - e.g. from /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/ttyUSB1. Is there a way to control that so that the same USB device will always have the same dev path? Or is there another path somewhere else that I can consistent...

I use about a dozen Raspberry PIs around my lab for various purposes for over a year now - mostly recording data or monitoring equipment. All of them are running the Raspbian OS. Some of them have lasted the entire year without any problems. Yet, for others I've had to replace the SD card a few time...
