I'll concur that this does happen. It seems to be a combination of the pressure of the pins that tend to push the card too hard up the middle without any support. Combine this with extended warming up of the card/pi (in my case glued to the back of a TV during multiple trade shows) and some SD cards...

Currently building something similar. It's first incarnation will be for a trade show stand, using 17 screens which will need to play animations in sync as well as loop presentations / movies when not synced.
