Re: OS read-only and data read-write SD partitioning

My vague understanding of SD/USB is that the controller micro in the USB stick is a bit smarter than the SD card version. With the controller in SSD drives even better at the wear leveling algorithms. SSD drives normally have more chips so wear is spread more. Then there is the technology in the mem...

Re: OS read-only and data read-write SD partitioning

So Ultibo with his 2s boot would be the best choice? Depends on your coding skill level, it is much more DIY. I have yet to use it as a camera, but some tricks like saving to memory and writing later to SD still apply. Assuming power is controlled ;) Raspbian has a GPIO pin assigned to power off al...

Re: What kind of displays are there?

Waveshare and others now have HDMI displays from 4.3" up to Full HD 13.6"? HDMI does not require drivers, most DPI/DSI drivers are Raspbian Debian only which could be an issue if you are using another OS. Choice of Touch SPI or USB. HDMI with USB touch can be used with PC's too. You can get versions...

Re: OS read-only and data read-write SD partitioning

That's how I use PiCore, read only OS and boot partitions and data in the the third partition. Not sure how to do this with Raspbian or other distributions. I have managed to get the Pi camera working in PiCore, but not full apps like MotionEye OS or Pikrellcam. Doing the same thing in Ultibo is on ...

Netbeans and JavaFX, start with the Stopwatch code example. Inspiration from here - https://github.com/HanSolo/Medusa RPM, Speed, voltage, pressure etc is harder to do, I use an external microcontroller, PSoC's in my cases. But an Arduino could do it. I use Ultibo and OpenVG these days because Zero'...

Squeak, YAFL? If I read the Squeak blurb right, Squeak plus baremetal C, perhaps Circle, could run the VM on baremetal Pi's with GUI? If David Harvey and Joris Van Der Hoeven are correct..., Er, I thought that was for numbers that had like 20Million+ digits? Have not tried Squeak but if it was suppo...

Re: Why Avoid BASIC on RPi?

Been reading up on Forth again, I think it might be starting to click after reading the 8th webpages. Perhaps I needed to learn a dozen language to see the advantages of Forth ;) Anyone done a baremetal Forth yet? Is there anything like Forth that makes readable code? The idea of making a MISC on a ...

Re: Why Avoid BASIC on RPi?

Reminds me of some solar and lunar recursion calculations for tides I did on 68HC05s long time ago. The recursion loop was 104 times so floating point gave ridiculous errors every now and again. Did it in BCD integers and got 1 minute tide accuracy. With 1440 minutes in each day that was accurate en...

Looks like x is set to zero?
As the text is wrapped at width you will also need to subtract the x offset from that too.

I have used JavaFX and Ultibo to overlay text on Video.
JavaFX was using OpenGLES? and Ultibo OpenVG.

Probably many other ways to do it.
It seems to be about the layer order for EGL/Dispmanx.

I wonder what Dave is thinking about his Avoiding Basic thread. Probably adding basic to his baremetal port of AmigaOS? Re: GIVE YOUR RASPBERRY PI SD CARD A BREAK: LOG TO RAM

Long term stuff I use PiCore, runs from ram. I collect data every minute, log it to a ram file and use cron to write that file to a 3rd partition once a day. Still using old SD cards as they have been installed for years. I might loose data on power out but I get emails when power comes back. The da...

Re: Why Avoid BASIC on RPi?

With all the choices of Languages to run on Pi's and the number of people doing all sorts of things, I'm not sure why there is a debate about languages. Is there a Python without whitespace? If not, why not? Pi's generally run languages on top of Linux. If you did baremetal what language would...

Re: Is ARM doomed?

Yes of course. But please, try it yourself before making that suggestion. Sorry, just assumed if you had made a RISC-V on a FPGA the first thing would have been adding a UART for serial console. Just found out on Friday that making GCC for RISC-V on my Pi probably did not kill my 32GB uSD. It has a...

My CNCing predate Pi's but I can relate to the drilling caliper issue.
I got one of those AA battery holders and wired that in, no more silly button cell going flat.
That first AA lasted for years ;)
Want to get back to CNCing so I can make casesfor all these PI's that seem to breed.

3D prints from PLA should be ok, that's made from Corn I think.
Wooden cases are getting popular, even seen bamboo keyboard.

But that case looks interesting.

Re: Why Avoid BASIC on RPi?

I'm curious why JavaScript isn't more popular on the RPi than Python? Is there some special relationship the Raspberry Pi foundation has with Python that everything seems based on it? JS and NodeJS are getting used on Pi's. I tried NodeJS but the NPM system I could not use behind a Uni firewall. Fo...
