Re: Surveillance camera based on BuildRoot and Motion

Thaui - the response I hoped for would be for someone to confirm that a space in the SSID can be a problem. I do not want to change my SSID to test this because it then means my current setup would become unavailable to my family while I mess about with my RPi. I have used my wifi USB dongle success...

Re: Surveillance camera based on BuildRoot and Motion

Following on from my failure to get wifi working, I have just re-read an older post in this thread that mentions that the SSID name should not have spaces - is that correct? My router has a name that contains two words with a space between them. This has worked with everything else since I got it! D...

Re: Surveillance camera based on BuildRoot and Motion

Like the look of this. Have had software running from fresh image on SD card, with Ethernet connection. When I try to enable wifi from within software using web page, I add SSID and key, then click on Apply button. I then end up with endless loop where from watching RPi indicator lights, it looks li...

Re: Redirection Confusion

When normal programs are writing to stdout or stderr they are not writing to any screen. They are writing to charter stream devices that are connected as stdout or stderr. That could be the terminal session you have open when you run the program. Or as you said files when redirected with > Or even ...

Re: Redirection Confusion

Redirection is used to change the destination of a program's streams. A program typically uses stdin, stdout, stderr. If a program doesn't write to one of those streams there is nothing to redirect. But surely, if the raspivid program writes to the screen that's stdout? If I redirect that to a file...

Redirection Confusion

In a terminal session, when I use the command

Code: Select all

ls -l > ls.txt
I get no visible output on screen but I get a file withthe output of the ls - l command. Great.

When I try

Code: Select all

raspivid > rasp.txt
I get the output on screen, an empty file called rasp.txt.

Why??

Using Issue 129 of Linux User, I am trying to follow the article on Page 38 to build a security camera, using a webcam. I have followed the article up to point 4, where it says to "compile MJPG-streamer. Point 4 says svn checkout svn://scn.code.sf.net/p/mjpg-streamer/code/mjpg-streamer-code but when...

Re: Port Forwarding

Thank you for that response. I've just realised a fundamental issue with my testing.... When on my home wifi, the IP address is local to my network - 192.168.1.150 but that means nothing outside of the network. I need to point the vnc software at the RPi but what address do I use? I know the ipaddre...

Port Forwarding

I have managed to set up VNC using Mocha Lite on my Ipad and Iphone, my laptop and desktop - all work fine to access my RPi (running tightvncserver) via wifi connection. I am now interested in setting things up so that I can access my RPi when away from home, i.e. outside of my own wifi network. I u...

Re: Messed Up Networking & Noobs Restart

That's it - thank you.

Now I just have to get back to where I was before I messed up! This is kind of why I asked in an earlier posting about backing up an SD card when a stable setup was reached.

Messed Up Networking & Noobs Restart

Until recently, my RPi had been ok connecting ot the internet but no, for some reason, I seem to have messed that up. I can use ssh from a PC or iPad to connect to the command line of the RPi, and that seems to work, but, when I want to access the internet, it does not connect. See posting sudo apt-...

Just thinking, is this problem a Raspbian only issue? Would I get more feedback if posted in another forum?.

Ok. Thank you.

Any ideas how I can follow this up to be able to use apt-get update?

Re: Code Help Please?

Thanks for those replies. I did start typing the code, in order to learn more about it, but found that even after trying a few lines of code, I ran into these problems. I then downloaded the code fom the book's website, and that didn't get through the syntax check. Yes, the line numbers seem screwed...

Managed to look at that, thank you. Sounds like I'd have to build something myself from their libraries. Their link to pre-built libraries seems to go nowhere.

Re: Before I mess about....

I don't feel that I got ripped off. Bought Samsung branded 8Gb SD card with NOOBS pre installed, from ModMyPi for £9.99. Before I mess about....

Hi. New RPi owner with some experience of computers but lots of questions! Firstly, are there local user groups where newcomers like myself can get help? I've tried IRC online but it seems slow for responses to questions. Seen that there are Facebook groups but not sure it is as technical as these f...
