Re: This fits into a few categories, so please help in the area you can. Thanks

So you are saying there is a way to make a RAM drive? Very interesting. There are several ways, or rather several different file systems that do it. Google will have more, search for tmpfs and others. That said, the advantage of putting thing like /tmp and /run into RAM isn't performance, it's that...

Re: Is it possible to use a Rasberry PI on a laptop?

To connect raspberry pi to laptop display, you can simply use an ethernet cable. The desktop GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the raspberry pi can be viewed through the laptop display using a 100Mbps ethernet connection between the two An ethernet cable is not enough. You need a VNC viewer and, id...

Re: Is it possible to use a Rasberry PI on a laptop?

I mention this because a lot of now very old chatter on the various forums gives the impression that this is way more difficult than it really is. FYI there's an in depth guide on the ethernet gadget here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=306121&p=1851130#p1851130 Ful...

Re: Mount of remote drive/share is failing "on demand"

Your mount options are incorrect. According to man 5 nfs, NFS supports neither the username= nor the password= mount options. Remove both and try again.

And double check the entry in /etc/exports on the server.

Hi All, Can't help on the software side but all Pi models with on board WiFi have onboard Bluetooth Thanks that is useful information. I seem to have offended you, for which I appologise. Doing so was not my intent.

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages of SDcards vs USB key

Well back to the comments and Questions 1) You could unplug your USB mouse and get one that connects via BT - that'd save you a USB slot right there. does that mean there is an internal bluetooth connection built into the RPis. But what software would I need to install, in order to, control a mouse...

Re: MSOffice on a Pi-400

Bottom line - on the desktop HP & Dell need Windows. RPT needs Linux. Even though now everybody can now, notionally, run both. But windows isn't just desktops and servers. And that's easy to forget. There are an awful lot of things out there that you'd expect to be running an embeded OS that ar...

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages of SDcards vs USB key

The number of available USB ports is a non-issue. Add a hub. There may be a performance boost moving to USB storage (especially USB 3) but I've no idea about the longevity of a USB flash drive. Like SD cards they're not designed as OS drives. A SATA SSD or HDD in a USB 3 enclosure would likely be th...

Re: What are low-cost alternatives to SATA-USB adapters ?

Usual warning: cheap, fast, good. Pick two.

I ended up ditching those and a 4B completely from my NAS and switching to a CM4, CM4IO and PCIe x1 SATA card setup for my NAS.

If you don't want to do that, find out what's killing those devices.

What in the world am I missing? I thought being 0777 would give anybody read, write, access? Samba cannot grant permissions denied by the OS. Plus AIUI those only apply to files and directories created by clients not to files and directories that already exist on the server. See https://www.samba.o...

I think the first point underestimates the lengths that Intel and AMD will go to to try and prevent another cpu offering that can provide good enough performance at a better price point.

I am using the official PSU but am overclocked to 2100 mhz. (I would go up to 2147 but have had stability issues in certain distros at that speed.)
Does the problem still exist without the oveerclock?

16 should be enough for command line logins and without camera support.

Desktop use may require more. The camera module definitely will.

Here's the real question I'd like answered: What will be the cost of a Windows 11 on ARM license? Historically, retail windows home licenses have been in th $100 to $150 price bracket. Is anyone likely to be willing to pay that to run Win11 on a $35 computer? As for MS Office, I don't use that on m...
