I believe this may be a symptom of the general USB issues. see this bug report https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/2050 I know this doesn't really help to resolve the issue, but at least if we can know more about why this happens, then maybe one of the kernel hackers can be motivated to fix ...

OS overwrite? I'm wondering if the add/remove OS discussion is similar to what I'm trying to accomplish. I'd like to be able to automatically OVERWRITE the one installed os (based on raspian for me) with either: -- a disk image on an additional partition of the SD card from which the OS is currently...

But... That should not happen until you open /dev/i2c, or likewise /dev/spixx... Soooo I think the original assertion stands....

I have also been having problems getting the proper module built and running. I started with Notro's quite handy instructions, which seem to indicate compiling on the pi itself. which takes FOREVER. I assumed that the instructions still held, but it turns out the new adafruit SD cards come with 3.6....
