Recompiled the kernel with USB Printing Support enabled. This was the last missing piece of the puzzle, so now my old HP came back to life (no win7 drivers). Thanks for the hint!

Hello, did you manage to set it up? I'm on 2012-09-18-wheezy-raspbian trying to get a HP LaserJet 1005 printing. I configured it using system-config-printer (Preferences/Printing) and all looks fine (jobs completed) except nothing comes out of the box.

Try it on Linux, there is a good chance it will work. If you are not familiar with Linux then http://www.sakis3g.org/ will come handy. In case you manage to connect, I don't see why it would not work on the RPi...
