Of course. Using the Pi as a media player is a very common use.
There's more than a million active users of kodi (mostly OSMC and LibreELEC) on Pi.
It's very straightforward to install.

Re: Moving Linux kernel to 4.19

In general we are not keen on backporting commits for new devices not supported by current kernel. That is really a decision for the upstream kernel maintainers. It's not something we can test and sometimes new drivers rely on other new kernel features so it may not be as simple as a single cherry p...

No errors, but nothing happens. Try printing out each of your converter variables. Note: # is a comment character in python, so you are losing some options. Try just doing: converter4 = "raspivid -o - --mode 7 -a 12 -t 50000 |cvlc -vvv stream:///dev/stdin --sout '#standard{access=http,mux=ts,dst=:8...

I can’t reproduce the bug reported there exactly once the pi has successfully booted, but I am experiencing a kernel panic during startup in about 3/5 of all startups, and the messages all have to do with lan78xx. Have those patches previously applied to the 4.14 branch been applied to the the 4.19...

Does reverting to 4.19.2 resolve the issue?
Do you get a kernel panic when it halts? Can you post the output?

I have tested a lot today and it really works well for video. But there is a problem with audio files: they need a lot of time to start (tested mp3 and flac)
Is this a general problem with vlc on pi, or is this an issue purely in the new accelerated version included in raspbian?

Same as with any raspbian kernel:

sudo modprobe configs

Re: Raspberry Pi TV Hat Playback Issues

Any idea why I get perfect playback from the browser with HD streams (BBC1 HD for example). Are they using an encoder built into the browser? HD streams are mostly H.264. SD streams are mostly MPEG-2 (but both of these vary with location). Sounds like your browser supports H.264 decode but not MPEG...

Re: Raspberry Pi TV Hat Playback Issues

The "Watch TV" button uses the browser's built in video decode support, and most browsers won't support MPEG-2 and possibly not H.264. That means the Pi has to transcode to a format supported by browser (e.g. VP8). Basically don't use that button. The play buttons on individual channels will allow a...
