Beginner with Raspbian

Where can I find a guide to all the Raspbian/Linux abbreviations? Every time I use the terminal, I come across abbreviations such as, -h or -sS. Is there a handy list of what these mean anywhere?

Re: Sense HAT What is I2C and do I need to enable?

Yes, Ben Nuttall couldn't understand why I had to do the dtoverlay = rpi-sense bit. Anyway I've summarised all the possible snags, I've had with the Sense HAT, here: https://geekgran.wordpress.com/ in the post Sense HAT - how to get your Sense HAT working. It might help newbies to it, like me.

Re: Sense HAT What is I2C and do I need to enable?

Hi Ben,

It seems to only do this if you are using Raspbian Stretch. I've stayed with Jessie for the moment.

Thanks mlepage. That explains it very clearly. Incidentally, for Sense HAT newbies like me, I've now written a guide at http://geekgran.wordpress.com . Scroll down to the Sense HAT - how to get your Sense HAT working post.

Re: Browsers for Mission Zero - which ones? - online safety?

Hi Ben, Thanks for your ideas. I'll try to get Chrome I think. Trinket just looks untidy in IE 11. The boxes overlap other print and the three item checklist doesn't all turn green when you've run good code. I have had no problems with Edge. We can write our code offline, on the R Pi but Mission Zer...

Browsers for Mission Zero - which ones? - online safety?

I've decided to have a go at Mission Zero with our Code Club. I go in once a week so I don't have much influence on what is available on our Windows laptops. At my home, the Trinket website seems to work well on Edge but not so well on IE 11 (Internet Explorer 11). At school I've got older laptops t...

Sense HAT What is I2C and do I need to enable?

I'm trying to write a troubleshooting document for using the Sense HAT for myself and other people who are using this HAT for the first time. Many, like me, will be starting out so we can do Astro Pi activities with children. While I was getting Sense HAT to work someone, in a forum, said, 'Enable I...

Re: Sense Hat Error

I had this problem too losthill I meet an error when I test the Sense Hat," it cannot detect the RPI-sense FB device" as attached picture. How can I solve this problem ? . . It was solved by doing the following: The R Pi is not recognising the Sense HAT. So go into the Terminal and alter config.txt ...

Re: Python program not saved on R Pi2

Thanks MarkDH102 for some really useful ideas. I use a memory stick so I think it's worth using them with the pupils. I would agree with you gkaiseril if I was their school teacher. However, the idea of Code Club is to get them interested and make it fun so I don't want to put them off coding early ...

Re: Python program not saved on R Pi2

Thanks MarkDH102, for looking into this problem in more depth. And yes the SD card was an old one I bought with NOOBS already on it when I first started using an R Pi about 2 1/2 years ago. I've now bought a new one. I'm interested in this difficulty because I want to introduce using an R Pi in my C...

Hi SkyRise,

Thanks for your quick answer! I suspected that would be the case. Right, I'll use a new SD card.
BTW, I looked for similar posts on Search but couldn't find anything relevant.

Python program not saved on R Pi2

I feel really stupid here because the problem is so elementary. I started typing a Python game program into (Python3) Idle yesterday and named then saved it. As I typed I saved regularly and checked the file path so I knew where to find it again. When I came back to it later the icon for the file wa...

Scratch2.0 offline on R Pi - Space Maze Activity

Hi, I've been trying to do the space maze activity from www.raspberrypi.org/learning/space-maze It goes fine on Windows but when I try it on an R Pi3 I've borrowed (from Yorkshire Jams lending library) I can't open the sprite or backdrop png files. When I try to open one in Scratch it goes to 'Recen...

Re: Getting Scratch2 onto an R Pi3

bensimmo Yes, if you remember or noticed someone jumping in sorting the serial problem out for the LoRA Hat, that was me. Or I was the one with the 9yr boy in a wheel chair (came a bit late) and a 12years older boy who had all sorts happening on the Enviro pHAT. Ah yes, I know. Yes, I want an Enviro...

Re: Getting Scratch2 onto an R Pi3

Hi bensimmo, P.S. did you go to the Hull Jam a week back? Yes. Were you there? Claire Garside who shares running HullRaspJam with Jon Witts runs LeedsRaspJam too, which I nearly always attend. BTW, I run a little Raspberry Jam in the west end of York, mainly for complete beginners. Our next one is o...

Hi B.Goode,

Other than clarifying that the first two steps are pre-requisites for the third, is there any reason to think he is wrong?

No. You are correct. I didn't realise Simon had put some instructions, further on, down the page.

Re: Getting Scratch2 onto an R Pi3

Hi bensimmo Thanks for your very clear and helpful explanation. It sounds as if we can leave out the 'dist' this time as the upgrade added Scratch 2.0 with no problems. I do believe it's better for novices, like me, to choose the option that makes the least changes to the software. For example, I wa...
