Re: PHP Question

PHP is now an honest-to-goodness OOP language, and I use it all the time. Every language has its + and - features, but I like PHP for its flexibility. You can write well-coded OOP and Design Patterns, or you can use it for snippets inside of an HTML program. It is my base language for my Raspi even ...

Change File Permissions

Here's a simple post on how to change file permissions using Raspbian with either File Manager or Terminal. (The terminal code is applicable to other Linux and even Unix systems.)

Re: PHP Game Programming

Hi Dougie, Both good ideas. I'll do it....but with a twist. There will be 3 levels of winners. 1. Starfleet Graduate (3 wins in a row) 2. First officer (4 wins in a row) 3. Starship captain (5 wins in a row) (The losers are always that guy who no one knows who is beamed down and gets zapped by alien...

PHP Game Programming

Hello Everybody, I posted the first in a series on programming articles for beginning game programming in PHP that Raspberry Pi developers/gamers may find useful: see: http://www.php5dp.com I found that working with SVG graphics requires the Chromium browser. You can get it free--just add the follow...

PHP Game Programming with SVG

A while back I took a Python course in game programming ( https://www.coursera.org/course/interactivepython ) and I can recommend it to anyone interested in learning both Python and game programming. (It's a FREE course from Rice University as part of the worldwide MOOC initiative. Sub-titles are av...

Re: PHP--full LAMP setup on Raspberry Pi

Hi Heater, That's what I had in mind, but instead of starting with a car, I was thinking space craft on a 2D plane (easier to move than on roads) but a car race is good too. I'll get started with the fundamentals of distance, collision, acceleration, deceleration and velocity, and you can do the sam...

Re: PHP--full LAMP setup on Raspberry Pi

Hi Heater, Your point, However the last time I checked PHP mostly ran on the server, in the LAMP stack, meanwhile the graphics rendering is all a happening in the browser. How are you intending to connect the physics engine on the server to the animation and user input in the browser in any way that...

Re: PHP--full LAMP setup on Raspberry Pi

Hi Dougie, What you say is true. I got into FORTH because it was open source. After 10 years with engineers at General Dynamics, I was very much into it. Then came Adobe's PostScript and it was so much like FORTH it was a quick study. I even had a Jupiter Ace that had FORTH in ROM. I learned Java ju...

Re: PHP--full LAMP setup on Raspberry Pi

Dougie, I was thinking of using PHP with some of the new Canvas functionality for graphics. I agree that PHP is zero with graphics (especially compared with ActionScript 3.0), but after working with a GUI package in Python, I think that PHP might be an interesting challenge for coming up with the ga...

Re: PHP--full LAMP setup on Raspberry Pi

Boy, now Dougie enters the fray. I am so grateful to Dougie for helping me get LAMP set up that I can only say good things about him. I'll remain mute on his comments. (Dougie may blame himself that I have PHP working so well with MySql.) As for comments about OOP, I'm all ears for a viable alternat...

Re: PHP--full LAMP setup on Raspberry Pi

Heater, You have a fanciful imagination. Lots of people use PHP, and it keeps getting better and better, and the stats bear that out. The Normalized Comparison at: http://langpop.com shows PHP to be the third most popular language. On the Google Files Results, it's First, way ahead of ASP and Java. ...

PHP--full LAMP setup on Raspberry Pi

After setting up PHP on Raspberry Pi, I had a difficult time getting MySql and the rest of the LAMP system going. I got a ton of help on this forum, and so I created a post on simplifying the process and avoiding the initial mistakes I made. You can find it at: http://www.php5dp.com/get-mysql-and-ph...

Re: [SOLVED]Weird connection issue with PHP and Mysql

Hi Donnie, There's no 'www' directory in the srv/ directory, and it would not let me create one. The baffling part of all of this is that when I first installed PHP on Raspi, everything worked fine. However, from reading about the sequence of installation, MySQL should precede PHP, and so PHP was re...

Hi Basingstoke, Well I managed to remove all of my PHP and MySQL, and I used your tip: sudo apt-get install php5-mysql and it would not install.
