Re: Fastest booting OS

mikerr wrote:As usual, the answer is "it depends"

Standard NOOBS raspbian image provided is of course relatively slow to boot(30 seconds),

Simply moving to Archlinux will get you under 10 seconds, with minimal messing
(many due to init/systemd difference)
No, Arch Linux took me about 17 seconds.

You can use an SD card AND a usb stick, but not a usb stick alone.

I tried 's', but still doesn't work.
Note: Using 'm' & 'n' can toggle subtitles on too.

Re: Speeding up youtube-dl

You have to install git first: sudo apt-get install git From inside your user directory run the following command git clone git://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl This will create a folder 'youtube-dl' in your home folder. Now run cd /usr/bin sudo mv youtube-dl youtube-dl-old (only if you had it installed...

Increase swap speed

In /etc/sysctl.conf there are a few rpi tweaks:

Code: Select all

# rpi tweaks
vm.swappiness=1
vm.min_free_kbytes = 8192
Does setting vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50 increase the swap speed?

I had installed omxplayer-git with pacman in Arch. When I use omxplayer, the video play smoothly but when I press 'm' for subtitle, the subtitle doesn't work.

Re: optimizing the raspberry pi

Disable it as suggested. There's nothing to be gained by swapping to the SDCard on a RPi. If you have a USB hard drive or SSD then swapping is less of a problem. The SDCard I/O rate is too slow and your RPi will behave like it is wading in treacle when swapping starts to happen. The real answer is ...

Sometimes, when the RAM is full, my pi freezes. Don't fill it. The ideal working set for most multi-tasking/multi-processing computer systems is about 67%. The warning bells should sound when you reach 85%. As soon as you get to 100% you'll land in swapping hell and it appears to freeze. The only a...

No HD (well, some 720p, but no 1080p at all), and the VLC browser plugin can not use the HW acceleration as far as I know.

If web get the new MMAL plugin to work it might be more efficient, though.
What is the difference between gstreamer and VLC MMAL?
