Re: New TV Tuner from HQ

Ha, just ordered one myself, after getting an email alert from The PiHut, hopefully I can set it up OK when it arrives, never done it before, but they have an article about it as well - so between the two, I should be able to. :) It'll be great to watch recorded programs on any machine, not just my...

Re: New TV Tuner from HQ

uHAT is the term we will be using I beleive. Its says "DVB TV HAT" on the boxes I got for my early support versions. It's "PHAT" shaped. One is sitting on my 3B+ with the WD HDD pretending to be a TV tuner. I just wish I could find out more about the Sony tuner and what it can do other than DVB-T b...

You should update to the latest build. There's a security advisory CVE-2018-12543.

It is the problem. V1.5 with the latest security patch needs the listener statement back in the config.

If you're doing an Instructables project and it doesn't work you should post a comment on the Instructable where the author will see it and should help you. Your URL in the subject line https://www.instructables.com/motion-detection doesn't work, that gets 404'd so what tutorial are your using (note...

Take all of the parms out of /boot/config.txt. What happens when you boot your RPi and let it discover the settings from the monitor's EDID data? Or try reading and decoding the EDID tvservice --dumpedid /tmp/edid edidparser /tmp/edid Normally with 99.9% of all HDMI/DVI equipment your RPi can use th...

I think there's a CMake file in there that generates a Makefile. With that you'll only recompile code that's changed.

Read the buildme script to see what it's doing.

Your range is wrong. You can't assign an address beyond 192.168.4.254 with a /24 netmask. 192.168.4.255 is the broadcast address for you network.

Re: Reset Pi time automatically without rebooting

Either replace timedatectl with NTP or restart timedatectl daily or fit a RTC hardware board.

At a distance adding a crontab to run sudo restart timesyncd is probably easiest for now.

Re: Moving Linux kernel to 4.14

Today's experiment is back to 0abe903f4a137e2738fe3be5f14a2a34afc9762b then I'll take a look later and see if I need to take another step back. I'm happy to build a kernel with a patch if needed (although I'd have to build twice with a kernel7 for my affected 2B). Plus I'm quite happy to experiment ...

Hmm, another checksum issue. There are a couple of github issues that may be relevant.
I found one - that's new enough and relevant. I can't work out what https://github.com/Hexxeh commit I need to go back to to avoid the error.

Leave it as is, anything else hinders anything in schools or general groups of educator setups. The number of children that forget things and even teachers after a few weeks away, when they are only slightly complicated passwords, is too much. Oh don't we love the head in the sand option. Revert it...

Would a kind soul do my job and tell me where the improvement comes from: kernel/firmware, userland, both?
Thanks ;)
It's probably in the Broadcom firmware package.

Re: Raspberry pi weather station build your own project

You can host MariaDB on one RPi and run your SQL on the other. The connect() defaults to localhost but can go remote. To do that you need to change the bind-address to 0.0.0.0 on the server and add some extra GRANT'ed privileges to the user table. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/15663001/remote-...

The RPi A+ is an expensive way to get a RPi ZWH without the on-board WiFi. You need a very special project to justify the extra cost of the A+.

I think it is about time to force changing the default Raspbian login password on initial setup. Currently there is just a warning message. This would ensure better security. What are your thoughts. They should ditch the pi userid and raspberry password. Get Raspbian to do an "out of the box" proce...

The GUI has the 'pi' userid embedded in the code. It's a crap design but that's how it has been built to make it easy to use. You may need to pile into the source code and compile some things to eliminate 'pi' completely.

Give them the 3B+ as it's easiest to use, fastest, has 5GHz WiFi on-board, has GB ethernet andhas the full set of four USBs.

Any other Raspberry is more specialised and needs a compromise for the missing features.

Re: 'Sudo' apps require 'root' password

Root is enabled but it doesn't have a password.

Use the default (pi) user's password which is "raspberry" until you change it.

That's the same for Raspbian and the X86 DebIan with RPD.
