Re: Pi now won't boot

well I've had 6 RPi's though my hands - only got 4 not - the other 2 are given away all work all have worked flawlessly [well apart from a couple of PEBKAC errors] I'd try a good quality SD card and powered USB hub [powering the RPI] with up to date software i.e. raspbian with sudo apt-get update &...

Re: Pi now won't boot

Reports are that almost all the devices that were returned as "defective" were actually fine. has been a front page article about it not so long ago. Chances are much bigger that the card is written wrong, power is not arriving, or even card is not inserted correctly than that the pi "just dies", o...

Re: Pi now won't boot

I tried booting once again with nothing connected except power and still red light only, no activity. Are you sure it didn't flash the green LED at all? Can you see a slight glow from the LED? nope, nothing, just the red led. I checked the sd card, it reads fine. What do you mean 'reads fine' can y...

Pi now won't boot

I just got my 2nd Pi setup and was happy to see this hardware finally boot even if the Pi has never shown itself to me to be stable and reliable hardware. after this board running fine for just long enough to setup the settings in raspian and update the packages over ethernet I loaded ntp then reboo...

Re: Why were so many pins dedicated to power & gnd

OP's complaints seem more political than technical, so this is mostly irrelevant to the topic. But if one was worrying about this because they wish they had more usable pins they could work with, the two flex cable connectors and the P5 header have a few extra. Also, demultiplexers, shift registers...

Why were so many pins dedicated to power & gnd

I was looking over the P1 expansion header on the RPi. why are so many pins dedicated to and duplicated for power and ground? It seems this same connector could have been 20 pins instead of 26, or six more gpio pins could have been brought out from the cpu in the same space. heck, as a start, p5 cou...

and indeed I think I have found the problem. X1 likely has a bit of trouble oscillating with C41 & C51 never having been installed at the factory.

Re: USB & Ethernet dead

That's an unusual one, we can't blame either power supply or a USB device; sounds like it is something on the board itself. If it's the same firmware and kernel that is working for other folks, sounds like we have to blame a hardware fault. I'd pretty much already figured this but my vendor is maki...

Re: USB & Ethernet dead

You mention 5V is "stable" but how close is it to 5.0 V? It's known that low voltage can cause this: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Trouble.....plugged_in If you're above 4.8 V or so, likely it's something else. Do you get ethernet working with no keyboard at all? to be exact the 5v rail measures 5.05v & t...

Re: USB & Ethernet dead

Does your pi simply not recognise your keyboard, or does it matter which USB port it is connected to? doesn't matter where the keyboard is connected same issue. no response to keyboard input. I can't say if enumeration is happening because I've been unable to get a login shell to examine the logs.

Re: New board - usb & ethernet both not working

How did you manage to get the Raspbian to boot into X I thought it defaults to running with a console login only?? A few things to try: -check the USB port make sure it's provide a voltage output (per port there are 4 solder points on the underside of the board you need to the outside for +ve and g...

Re: New board - usb & ethernet both not working

no usb hub involved. powered directly from a 2A 5V wall wart. should be sufficient! measured the voltage right at 5V and steady, scope shows very little ripple. Don't know what you mean as to setup... it just booted to the screen with X. Assumption again is that you bought pre-programmed sd card as...

New board - usb & ethernet both not working

It would seem my new raspberry pi has non-functioning usb and ethernet ports. So here's what I've done to get to this point and determine that USB and Ethernet ports are bad: I plugged in and set up the RPi per http://www.raspberrypi.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/quick-start-guide-v2.pdf I watched ...
