Re: Framebuffer difference in RPi-4

Thank you for the explanation 6by9. I'll stop scribbling with the frame buffer and do it right.

Re: Framebuffer difference in RPi-4

Thanks James. I commented that out and it solved my problem. What might not work the same when I don't have the vc4-fkms-v3d overlay? Edit: I see that with it commented out, I no longer have two-monitor capability on X-windows. I imagine there could be an option that lets me have two-monitor with th...

Framebuffer difference in RPi-4

I wrote a program that sent camera images from one Pi to another that displayed them using the frame buffer. The images showed up in the X-window (without controls). When trying this program on the RPi-4, the image shows up in the frame buffer acquired by ctrl-alt-f1, etc, but not in the X-window. I...

High Endurance SD Card Solved Hang Problems

Just in case others might have seen this problem, here is my experience. My critter cam had ran for over a year all day, but recently started hanging mysteriously every few days near the end of a very hot summer (lots of 100 degree F days). I could still ping it, but not ssh into it. Killing its pow...

This work around to avoid accidentally losing all your menu edits is still necessary in Stretch.

Re: Menu Problem - Items added that do not appear in menu ed

I have now removed the "Cancel" option by editing /usr/share/alacarte/alacarte.ui, lines 54-70 that define a child button named "Cancel". That code actually does a "restore to default menus" function, effectively removing user-defined changes. Without that restore capability, you must individually d...

Re: Menu Problem - Items added that do not appear in menu ed

I have been frustrated by the menu editor for some time. I just tried it again and here is what I did and saw: Created a new top level menu named "Science-1A" (without quotes, of course) In that menu, I created a submenu named "thermo". In thermo, I created an item that ran an animated gif. After cl...

Re: Avogadro Memory Leak

I did a fresh install from 2017-03-02-raspbian-jessie.zip, installed Avogadro again (1.03), and the problem remained, but I then learned something interesting - I found that the problem goes away if I turn off the "Hydrogen bonds" option from the Display menu. This option causes the memory leak whet...

TimG - Thanks for the suggestion. I ran your script and it then installed Avogadro 1.2 as proven in the About window. All the tools appeared to display correctly and operate, but I was unable to get it to produce anything in its drawing area on the screen, not even a simple carbon atom. Loading stor...

Re: Avogadro Memory Leak

Thanks for the note jamesh. I have successfully used valgrind on my own programs, and had tried valgrind on this avogadro problem, but it bombed with the following message immersed in other notes: disInstr(arm): unhandled instruction: 0xF1010200 cond=15(0xF) 27:20=16(0x10) 4:4=0 3:0=0(0x0) ==1197== ...

Avogadro Memory Leak

I find the molecular model program Avogadro very useful when teaching chemistry, but I have found that it has a serious memory leak that ultimately slows down my Raspberry Pi 3 until I am unable to even close Avogadro or open a command-line window. The memory leak can be demonstrated by doing an aut...

Re: PIXEL desktop: Large menu folders crash taskbar

Regarding the loss of alacarte entries when using Cancel on the menu editor: I have not solved this problem, but gained some information that might be useful. The file ~/.config/menus/lxde-pi-applications.menu is deleted when the menu editor is closed using its Cancel button. At the same time, the c...

Menu editor "Cancel" destroys previously added items

@spl23 There is a different menu editor problem that has caused me much frustration. If you add new menus (with items) all is fine, but if later you accidentally open the menu editor and then click Cancel, your new menu items disappear. I have been backing up the alacarte files as a precaution, but ...

Re: Main Menu Editor doesn't update

Maybe I should not call it a work-around. What I do is make a copy of my additions in case I lose them again: From the link: I found that I could backup the ~/.config/menus/lxde-pi-applications menu entry elsewhere and restore it when my "Science-1A" menu tree vanished. However, after doing that, it...

Re: Terminal window size.

I have used this suggestion to add --geometry=72x16 to the menu command, but when I open a new tab in the lxterminal, the new tab and original tab are both resized to some default size that goes off the Pi display screen. This smells like a bug in the lxterminal program, but maybe I just didn't do t...

Missing Menu Additions

The following information may be helpful for those who have lost their menu additions. For the past few weeks, I have tried to create a useful new menu for a class "Science-1A" that I teach, but it works for a few days and then reverts to the standard menu. I place my new entry named "Science-1A" ab...

Thank you moslemk. This fixed my problem mentioned a few days ago about Avogadro not working in Jessie. Slight Difference between Wheezy and Jessie spi drivers

When I updated to Jessie, I no longer was able to program the ATmega328P on the Gertboard. I had been using my own python program to upload the .obj code from the avra assembler to the ATmega328P using the connections shown in the Gertboard instructions (page 43). It seems that in Wheezy, my program...

I am very interested in showing of how Avogadro runs on the Pi to my science students, but it appears not to run (OpenGL not supported error) in Jessie. I also got that in Wheezy for the first year or two, but some wonderful update fixed that. When might I expect such an update for Jessie?

I notice a misspellings of "kernel" and "input" in the error message you quoted. Do those reflect an error in the command or just typos in your forum submission? Spots when lens removed

I removed the lens (carefully) to use the pi with a dead digital microscope. I was successful and the microscope now works with the Pi and its camera, but it had 3 spots on the screen with sizes corresponding to 5 or 10 pixels. I determined that they were not from the microscope, and when I reinsert...
