Compton / Xcompmgr and the Pi 3?

I've just bought a Pi 3 having owned the 2 a couple of years back. Very pleased with it for my modest use needs - perverse as it sounds it's being used primarily as a word processor - but am giving in to some minor tinkering to see if I can make it a bit more swish without much effort. With the Pi 2...

a Fluxbox setup - much work?

Today I've downloaded the Arch Arm6 img file with a view to setting up a minimalist Pi installation using either Fluxbox or DWM and then only having a need for a text editor on top of that, Leafpad. I remember back when I was not the passive consumer I've become, I laboriously setup Debian from a mi...

Great, that worked thanks. The .Xresources values took effect after rebooting with that installed.

Re: font rendering - .Xdefaults ? .Xresources ? [Solved]

This has stopped working with the new Raspbian .img - there is a gripe from X i gather going by its crude font and icon that tells me that xorg-xrdb isn't installed. When I try to install it it's not available. As I'll be deliberately offline with my Pi after setup I think I'll probably go back to S...

remapping AltGr key [Solved]

I bought this keyboard when bizarrely it had an alt gr key but no alt key. Now they've got the alt key: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUMVISION-RIO-WIRELESS-2-4GHZ-MINI-MULTIMEDIA-KEYBOARD-TRACKBALL-9M-RANGE-/191055374182?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_KeyboardsMice&hash=item2c7bc9a766 Can I remap t...

Re: Fluxbox and dependencies

I've got it installed now as far as i can see but it doesn't start when chosen as a session.

Only libfribidi0 was required, with no griping about other dependencies using dpkg, so maybe I need to find a Fluxbox forum.

Fluxbox and dependencies

I'm thinking of switching to Fluxbox over the top of the standard Raspbian install. I no longer have broadband, just mobile broadband with a not very linux-friendly dongle, so i'd be downloading the .debs on my W7 pc and moving them over on a memory stick, installing with dpkg. Is someone here in a ...

Re: font rendering - .Xdefaults ? .Xresources ? [Solved]

Thanks. Having in the last fifteen minutes perfected things for LXDE I don't want to try anything else in case I can't undo it, ha. In the end I didn't have to settle for Openbox + lxpanel. I went into /home/pi/.config/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf and deleted the lines that deal with the same paramet...

Re: font rendering - .Xdefaults ? .Xresources ? [Solved]

i've pretty much cracked this now - see .Xresources file below (goes in the pi or home folder, then reboot). This works with Openbox but LXDE so far ignores it, or lxappearance overrides it maybe. I'm guessing Fluxbox would use the file too but my Pi is being kept offline deliberately so I can't ins...

font rendering - .Xdefaults ? .Xresources ? [Solved]

Hadn't used the Pi for a few months but have found a good specific use for it with Raspbian now - it's now an in my case conveniently non-portable word processor - and have been re-familiarising myself today. I'm sure I used a file to tidy up the font rendering. It was either .Xdefaults or .Xresourc...

Re: pi software packages site?

Thanks, the mission was a success! This reply has come from my Pi via mobile broadband... It was a fairly quick job after looking at where you linked to gather up the files and install them with sudo dpkg --install with a few bits of trial and error while I remembered which were dependencies. I seem...

pi software packages site?

Debian and Ubuntu have a site each beginning packages... (e.g. http://packages.debian.org/stable/) which has sometimes enabled me to work round being offline most of the time. Does the Raspberry Pi have an equivalent? There are about eight packages which I think could enable me to get my mobile broa...

external DVD drives/ hard drives?

I've tried a Samsung that's purely USB and a hefty old LG which has mains power. Though they show up in both Raspbian and Xbian the DVDs don't play. I've installed the paid for codecs. Presumably the Samsung won't work unless connected to a powered hub and then only if the missing factor is dealt wi...

Re: Customising the LXDE desktop

As people are looking here and as a fan of LXDE I'll answer the question and summarise what I additionally do: Wallpaper and desktop icon fonts: right-click the desktop > Desktop settings. 9px fonts seem to look sensible Shadows on menus and window borders and menu/window fades: sudo apt-get install...

Re: How do i get on the internet?

Just before my Pi arrived the other day I was having the same bother, stuck at the same stage, using a Linux-based media center I'd made out of spares. What dongle is it, and do you know what chip it uses either from the manual or googling? I gave up with my dongle and put it in my Windows machine a...

Re: Su/sudo issue

Lovely, this is sorted now I think. I set the root password and made the correct sudoers file alteration as sudo still did not need a password (although I hadn't rebooted, if that's relevant). Su and sudo behave as I'm used to them behaving now, but do say if I boobed in my method as described, in o...

Re: MATE for Raspbian

I'm more or less a layman, and I don't know if Mate for Raspbian is ongoing, but how much of wanting it over LXDE is aesthetic, how much also about thinking LXDE is functionally significantly inferior due to what you're used to? In the run-up to getting my Pi I'd been using LXDE more and more despit...

Having trouble with sudo

Hello. I've experimented before and after my last post on this (making this one here as it seems more suitable and I'd overlooked this category before). I was asking about su and sudo which don't behave as I'd expected - trying to use su gives 'authentication failure' and sudo doesn't ask for a pass...

Su/sudo issue

I've made Raspbian SD installs twice to be sure of this but su and sudo don't seem to be working as expected. I get authentication error if I try to use su, and with sudo I'm never asked for a password, which can't be good. I'd be happy with either the Debian-style use of su or a password-protected ...

Re: combining keyboard and mouse

There are a few keyboards with built in trackballs or touchpads - I've just bought a Sumvision one about 9x3 inches with trackball. Most of the day I've had my Pi up and running I've had the other slot free. This keyboard works very well, out of the box too, no driver faffing. Am I allowed to say it...
