In UK CPC/Farnell or RS are the big component suppliers but there are lots of smaller suppliers and of course there is ebay items from china for small modules that are very good value but take a while to arrive Simon Unfortunately, my experience with Chinese suppliers selling via eBay is very mixed...

I've played with SDL a little on the PC using the Linux before and it is very useful.

Depends on what you ultimately want to do with your programming skills. If you want to do systems-level programs, it never hurts to learn C. You will have to eventually, so why not start there?
