8.9M sounds like a small file to me. If you were getting close to 2GB, I might concur that playing with 64 bit might be a good idea, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Have you experimented with a control? e.g. have a tiny program that all it does is stat the file, and print the results? Experime...

Sorry if this seems stupid: If i want to develop apps in c on a windows platform and then run them on the pi, what are my options? I'm considering starting with eclipse, but not too sure where to go from there. Any thoughts? I think you may be setting yourself up with a handicap. It's probably fine...
