Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

Is there someone at RS people in this situation could contact to ask for 'Brazilian style' shipping? Mike @ raspberrypi@rswww.com is the one I talked to last time (referred to by Margareth Walker @ margaret.walker@rs-components.com ). But I still have no confirmation that it actually shipped, let a...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

The problem with this system is when the government doesn't charge any tax at all for importing something that cost 35$ by regular airmail services, but does when importing by courier. As a result there is also fees for recovering these taxes. Understandable. All it takes to avoid this is to ship b...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

I spoke to Mike this morning, and apparently Brazilian orders are now being sent via local parcel post to avoid liability for that massive courier tax. It's meant that some orders in that country have been held up (they held them back until the new shipping method was available), but I understand t...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

C'mon, we are the thankful ones... There's been nothing this exciting from a tinkerer's point of view since the days of the MSX (most Brazilians didn't start with the Sinclair Spectrum like I did, none as far as I know have seen a working BBC Micro).

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

Just stirring the pot a little: Last Friday marked a month since I refused delivery of my Raspberry Pi and three weeks since the last time I heard anything from RS about it. They never sent me a tracking e-mail in the first place, took a whole week to answer my e-mail about the subject and haven't e...

Re: VIA's entry into the low cost computer market

Shipping is a bitch. My Pi quickly climbed to $109 because of RS' lousy shipping options.

I had to refuse delivery and weep as I watched it go.

Yep, the SEDEX (Correio's parcel service) has, as options, "Aviso de Recebimento" (delivery notification) and "Mão Própria" (delivered only to the addressee). Even without such options, parcels must be signed on delivery.

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

As to the tax situations and DHL's rather high fees, I agree, they are exorbitant, but nothing to do with the Foundation. And since we are on the subject of caring, and of missing the point, may I give my two cents on why this is not at all the Foundation's fault, but it does, indeed, have a lot to...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

But if I may say so, that totally misses the point of getting a cheap computer to developing nations. If you want to avoid paying tax to the Brazilian government, maybe the Brazilian government has some responsibility here. Why should UK companies go out of their way to avoid a Brazilian tax? The B...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

Exemptions:Shipments totaling up to U.S. $ 50.00 (fifty dollars) shall be exempt from taxes only if they are transported by the postal service, and that the sender and recipient are individuals; That's the point: RS used DHL, which is not, by definition, a postal service; it is a courier. Therefore...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

I can see where the miscommunication has arisen, but as I understand it, standard delivery for RS is courier, as is stated somewhere in their T&C's/delivery section of their website. Whenever I do business with RS I use the even-more-rational "pick order up at local representative", they'll actuall...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

Actually davez, as I explained in my first post, I do know quite well the taxation rules (and exceptions) and I was mislead by RS's definition of a DHL courier delivery as "standard shipping". Standard mail imports to Brazil are never taxed when below US$ 50, whereas courier shipping always pays imp...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

Quite the opposite: Both RS and Farnell/Newark/Element 14 are big, multinational corps that are used to selling components abroad to hundreds of countries, therefore they can't plead ignorance about methods of taxation by either the countries they're delivering to nor about fees DHL might charge the...

Re: The most expensive R-Pi of the world!

I refused delivery on my Pi because of that... The problem is that courier deliveries are taxed very differently from mail deliveries in Brazil. When you order something abroad and it arrives thru the mail, you only pay import taxes on goods over US$50,00 (for some reason the taxation considers ship...
