Too soon; after some time the analogue input version also started to add some digital artifacts.

An update. Using analogue input works without any blips.

So I need to try a few changes to the alsaloop options for SPDIF.

Setup: Pi3B, Cirrus audio card, SPDIF input, alsaloop, tailored asound.conf, usb output to two digital amplifiers. Exactly the same problem.
Using ALSA to crossover and equalise active speakers via usb amplifiers. This works excellently.
A workaround - which will fail at a major software upgrade, probably - is to comment out the line in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf that includes the .asoundrc in home directory.
