Nice work, but a power-circuit would make it perfect. A button that can power-on and power-down the Pi and the possibility for the LIRC circuit to do that too. I had started to design my own version using a PIC, but didn't find the time to finish it. Rough sketch is here.

Your are looking for something like this. Once you have this on your phone and can connect the phone via bluetooth to Linux you've got a remote. Using it as a joystick should be doable similarly.
