Re: Read-only SD cards for school Lab?

It does certainly sound like PiNet (or PiServer) would be the answer here. I can only speak for PiNet, but in the case of PiNet the SD card image only used for the first ~5-10 seconds of boot, after which it is marked as read only. The main OS itself is then pulled over the network. It of course com...

Re: Setting up a Classroom of 30 Pi's

Thank you for the information, really helpful... just need to find switches and rewire the room again :? thought we could get away with wireless. Unfortunately both solutions (PiServer and PiNet) require a half decent wired network. In the case of PiNet, all the details on the hardware requir...

Re: PiServer and printers

After doing some extensive research, I have dropped the plan to use PiServer and have opted for PiNet which is more mature and flexible as an application. Many thanks for the help of the PiNet developers who answered my queries via Twitter DMs Hi johnbreen, it would be great if you could share the ...

Re: Managing Kiosks on Large Network

I work for a large company and we are looking at Raspberry Pi with the Kiosk OS. However with how large (area) our company is, I want to know what my options are for maintaining the patches and updates? I have looked at PiNet, but I am unsure if it will work since it will have to make at minimum 4-...

Re: Pinet control applications seen by clients

PiNet lead developer here. Unfortunately I am not sure of a nice way to do what you are after, certainly not cleanly anyway. You can configure a Pi to auto log in with a specific user by its MAC address, but that user can still in theory access every application installed on the base image which all...

Re: Please Help -Pinet Epoptes client SD cards just won't boot for Pi Zero W

Hi, The Pinet client SD card boots up just fine on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ where I can login and do stuff :-) i.e shows up in the PiNet Servers dashboard. etc... but if you place the same PiNet client SD card into a Pi Zero W you get a rainbow screen from the very beginning. 1) I've only just started wo...

Re: Please Help -Pinet Epoptes client SD cards just won't boot

Hi GBaman, thank you for your reply. If I understand you correctly... 1) If I want to demo my setup to others with say only 4 x Raspberry Pi 3B+ (i.e 1 for the server and 3 for Pinet clients) , Pinet Server will install on a 3B+ and run with the clients (3 x Pi 3B+ machines) booting up accordingly....

Hi and thanks to everyone who is contributing to this post, the Alpha version DID boot up as expected (really grateful), but have not fully tested it yet. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Pinet needs a standard PC/Laptop to act as the server, but I am still not 100% sure I understand why I ca...

Re: Please Help -Pinet Epoptes client SD cards just won't boot

Why still Jessie ? surely Stretch on 3B+ would be better ?? I very much agree, but a major upgrade like Jessie-Stretch for most schools only makes sense over the summer holidays, but many schools will increase the number of Pis they use throughout the year and obviously will only buy 3B+ after it i...

Hi, I've only just got my first Raspberry Pi 3B+ (10 days) and I've managed to get a wifi hotspot and dnsmasq working, however for the last 48 hours i've been working nonstop on Pinet with no luck getting any client SD card to boot up. Next, just a normal terminal window or the PiNet control panel? Perhaps a terminal into the virtual chroot to make edits to the Raspb...

Re: Raspberry Pi Computer Lab for High Needs School

One of my more tech-savy students figured out how to share the files with the teacher. The individual users have to grant permission for the teacher to view files and the desktop. It works flawlessly. Example: The student writes an essay, and the teacher can view after being saved. The teacher ente...

Re: Raspberry Pi Computer Lab for High Needs School

The SD Cards are the biggest hurdle. I just found them for fairly cheap. If I made the switch the Pi Net could the already networked 4 be used? In theory there should be no issues; in practice switching also depends on how much data and how many student accounts need to be migrated from PiServer to...

Just to confirm, (again I am obviously biased), although PiNet as well as included shared folders integrated right in the file manager on the left hand side, it also includes a full work hand-in system. Each student simply has a folder in their home folder called handin that they can save a copy of...

Re: Raspberry Pi for Desktops - PiNEt / PiServer?

Developer of PiNet here, my advice would be going down the LTSP route. Call me slightly biased if you want (PiNet is built on top of LTSP), but it is basically the only real formally supported platform for handling a full network booting classroom environment for Linux. Mainly given it does more tha...

Re: Freeze Raspbian Stretch (or Read-Only) for High School library

Maybe PiNet would be worth investigating? I think PiNet is exactly what the OP needs. It doesn't allow any "regular" user to update anything on the RPi. All of the stuff created gets stored on the PiNet hard drive. So there's no problems with SDCard corruption, loss, damage or malicious hacking. I ...

Re: PiNet - Multiple Groups for Classes?

So looking at it, yeah it probably is doable to limit access via groups. The section of code in PiNet in relation to this is here - https://github.com/PiNet/PiNet/blob/jessie-stable/pinet#L1146 . The bindfs mount file needs edited - nano /usr/local/bin/bindfs-mount And replace the perms=0775,force-g...
