Another note:
I have never seen a usb optical mouse go south before. I had been using
the mouse for over a year and thought it was indestructible.
First step from now on: try different mouse/keyboard.

As an afterthought, I ran startx
and the mouse and keyboard still aren't working.

to be clear:
1. I removed the usb keyboard and usb mouse.
2. sudo reboot
3. dmesg | grep usb > usb.txt
4. Added a separator to usb.tx
5. Plugged in the usb keyboard and usb mouse
6. dmesg | grep usb >> usb.txt

The gui is the basic gui. There are no artifacts on the screen. The power supply should be ok, since it supports wheezy with gui.
