I'm glad the color banding wasn't a Pi issue, however I'm experiencing the exact same washed out black as you describe. I have my Pi connected to my Onkyo 875 receiver which in turn is connected to the TV. I also have another linux PC running XBMC and also connects to the receiver via it's GeForce 2...
