Re: Motion-MMAL Auto Start on Boot?

I start motion with a cron job

Edit the root cron job file:-
sudo crontab -e

add the line:-
@reboot motion

save and exit (ctrl+x, then Y to confirm changes)

It should work if you have the motion daemon enabled.

Re: Mechanical IR-cut out filter for Pi-Noir

I just recently bought and fitted an IR Cut filter switcher, purchased on ebay, for the astonishing price of £1.19 including shipping. It has a large enough filter to sit comfortably in front of the PiNoir. To flip it from day to night, I use a simple H-bridge circuit that flips it one way or the ot...

RichiG wrote:"sudo UPDATE_SELF=0 rpi-update" solved the problem for me. The last rpi-update was 5 months ago.
That does solve workaround the issue. There is a new update, that adds better functionality to the camera module.

Re: RPI-Update issue

Damn. I can't rpi-update, on any of my RPi. I've been looking forward to trying out the new camera modes, while away on holiday, but I guess I will have to just try again tomorrow and throw a baby tantrum, if I can't get it. Re: Motion - MMAL camera

I can't remember where I found it, but somebody shared a bash script that gets motion to quit cleanly. You run it as sudo. #!/bin/sh sudo ps -ef | grep motion | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill I use it, because I run motion in the background with sudo nohup motion & I probably shouldn't be running mot...

Re: Bat study - technical help wanted -

Hi, I recommend using Motion for seeing when the bats leave the box. I use it with a Raspberry Pi and PiNoir, to see the hedgehogs that visit the garden. It has been a revelation to see that they are still coming at this time of year. It's helped us decide to keep putting out some food for them at a...

Re: Longest Raspberry Pi uptime

The Pi, that I bought last Christmas, has been on for 99.9% of the time. I've powered it down a few times, just to swap peripherals and to make backups of the SD card. I use it with RaspBMC, which I like a lot.

Re: Strip Board like this

I paid a whopping £2 for some cheap boards (4 of 50x70mm) that only have copper dots. I could solder stuff on and add tracks any direction with the sticky backed copper slug barrier tape that I have. It might not be the perfect solution, but it is cheap. And I like cheap. :D

Re: Cheap BMP085 problem

DougieLawson, I haven't done any calibration on it. The Adafruit example code spits out those three figures. I doubt that it is calibrated, as the altitude is wrong. It's something that I can play with in time. At the moment, I am happy that it is integrated into the system ok and ready to be played...

Re: Cheap BMP085 problem

Just a quick update. I only got to install the BMP085 today, due to the horrendous weather we are having. I'm pleased to say that it is working fine and the Adafruit python code outputs data:- Adafruit_BMP085_example.py Temperature: 2.00 C Pressure: 975.27 hPa Altitude: 320.35 It was simply the case...

Cheap BMP085 problem

Hi, I bought a cheap BMP085 barometric sensor module on ebay. I see, now that it has arrived, that the pinout is not the same as the ones I see people using. The main issue is that it does not appear to have the SCL pin! :( The pins as they appear on the module are:- VCC SDA SDL XCLR EOC GND Clearly...

Thanks again. I will take a look at the script you've posted. I've updated my simple script, that I run using Cron. I'm pretty new to scripting and what not, so I don't do anything fancy. Thanks for the encouraging information SteveDee and christoph.tewes. I'll try and see what I can do with those tips soon.

I was surprised to see that some people are having difficulty with the sensors conflicting with the camera. I don't know what is any different with my setup, but they just work.

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

I've been wondering if it's possible to get Motion to add sensor data to images? I have a DS18B20 temperature sensor, which I've set up to save to a simple text file. I've tried to figure out a way to get the data put on the output images, but I'm not knowledgeable enough. I couldn't figure out how ...

Re: Banding on video but not on Stills

When I got my camera module, I noticed banding on the output. I quickly discovered that it is caused by interference from the power source. I had been using a cheap micro-usb cable that had poor shielding. I swapped it for a good cable that has a ferrite bead and it cleared up. The camera module rib...

Re: DS18B20 + Camera module; modprobe breaks camera

This is strange, because I am using this sensor and running motion MMAL at the same time. It works flawlessly for me. I notice that in dmesg, I see "w1_master_driver w1_bus_master1: Family 28 for 28.0000053a951e.55 is not registered.". However, the sensor is happily working. I have set up a Cron job...

Think I might just cut some holes in it.

When I'm dead and somebody is rummaging round a car boot sale, they can swear at the sod, who vandalised a perfect box.

Thanks for your input folks.

Is it sacrilege to cut up the nice pink box?

I got my Pi a few days ago. It came in the nice pink plastic box, which, I notice has a convenient holder for the Pi. I'm debating cutting holes, to allow all the cables to go in.

Should I be less lazy and make something that doesn't involve butchering the nice box?

Re: No sound on 2012-12-16-wheezy-raspian

I've only had my Pi a couple of days, so I'm just getting to grips with the beginning of it. I've been pulling my hair out, over no audio on my Pi, even from a fresh SD image of the 2012-12-16-wheezy-raspbian. I'd spent ages fiddling around in terminal trying various changes to config.txt, with no j...

I'm no programmer, but I can get my head round the idea of less being more. When I was a kid, my bedroom was a 5'10" x 6' space. I crammed a lot in there. A bigger room would be nice, but you end up cramming more junk in and running around trying to find it all. I like the small house movement. I th...

I suck at making my mind up. I'm driving myself round the twist trying to decide what keyboard to get for the Pi. I want a very cheap <£20 wireless keyboard with touchpad. If only I knew they would all work out of the box. It also sucks that Parcelforce tracking for my Pi says: "In delivery depot". ...

Just received an email confirming despatch by Parcel Force express 24 service. I guess that means I should have my Pi soon. It seems quite a reasonable despatch time to me, considering it has been during holidays. I only placed the order a week ago.

Fingers crossed for fun. :)

Re: What is up with RS Components ?

This is depressing to read. I've ordered from RS on the strength of the 1 week expected despatch time. I hope that they have sorted their act out, or I will be getting fed up and angry.

My confirmation email says expected despatch 1 week(s). :(
