When you say it freezes up is it that you cannot ssh into the device this could mean you lost network connectivity. Are you using dedicated screens and keyboards and they become non responsive. I would look into those types of issues if possible. As it will help decide what your troubleshooting the...

But 40 to 45c is normal temp the lowest rated max temp is the Network adapter it can operate up to 70c according to the FAQ the SOC should be able to go up to 85c and both could operate past those temps ... Maybe a defect in the board i'm not writing off the possibility of a flakey pi (heh heh...) ...
