If you open up your file manager, right click and pick show hidden then go to /home/pi/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi there should be a text file called autostart right click and open in a text editor add :-

@firefox-esr

Now it will auto load firefox, just tried it and worked for me.

I have renamed the folder Adwaita in /usr/share/icons/Adwaita to /usr/share/icons/XAdwaita so it doesn't load this pointer by default, it now loads what i believe is the old default pointer where instead of having an animated busy pointer when loading a program it just shows like a non animated watc...

If that is the case then wouldn't every one have this problem, as the hardware and os sorftware are the same? i tried a microsoft mouse and that didn't fix it. I have the same problem on Raspbian 2014-12-24 version even after updating it. The mouse pointer vanishes when hovering over a menu catagory or sub catagory or when clicking the x to close a window it vanishes but when moving the mouse a tiny bit it shows up again. thanks! it came with an orange protective sticker on the HDMI socket, is this meant to be removed?
