Looking at the NAIS-300 manual it says it has a RS232 output/input. If the adapter you bought is a USB to TTL adapter, I'm afraid it won't work. You'll need a USB to RS232 adapter like Dougie said. I use this www.msldigital.com IR power switch. You can program the on/off function for any remote and when shutting down it will do a proper shutdown on the Pi
