I bought mine from adafruit https://www.adafruit.com/products/181.
They have a great tutorial here http://learn.adafruit.com/drive-a-16x2- ... spberry-pi, python code included :D !!!

My initialization sequence was in fact wrong, I fixed it just before you posted.
The biggest bug was in pulse(), I was using pinMode instead of digitalWrite.

It works now !!!!
I fixed some bugs in the pulse() function.
The code is here https://bitbucket.org/Asion/raspberrypi/src if someone is interested in playing with it.
The program is still not finished because I need to add a better way to print strings on the lcd but the harder part is done :D.

In writeBytes(), I think you want to change: pinMode(header->registerSelect, mode); to: digitalWrite(header->registerSelect, mode); You want to change the output value, not the I/O direction. Enjoy! As much as I know the red light only means that the pi cannot find a valid image on the sd card, it's possible that you made some mistakes either using dd or downloading the image (check the hash key). Also remember to remove the hidden files that osx place on the sd card because they may stop the b...
