Re: Wireless power management won't turn off

The automatic pinging thing would be great if I used the adapter to connect to network, but my Pi works as an access point – gets internet via a cable and transmits it wirelessly. Thanks for the idea, though, it may be the way to the solution (although, not very obvious) You could try pinging your ...

Guess that means this command worked ok. And a "ls -al" will show the file is zero length too

Are you piping call into a file?
How do I do that?
There is no error output.
sudo -u user1 /usr/local/bin/gpio export 17 out > error.file
then
more error.file
to see the output

Re: Wireless power management won't turn off

You could write a little script to ping your default gateway every 5 minutes. I have one which reboots the pi.. here are the bits out of it. # Check the network ping -c 2 192.168.0.254 > /dev/null 2>&1 if [ $? -ne 0 ] ; then echo "Network down: restarting" | logger -t root -p local5.info /sbin/reboo...

You might need to specify something else too. I have a script which run every 5 minutes between two hours...

*/5 9-16 * * * /home/pi/sma.cron

Have a go with the hours, even 0-23 and it might work for you.

Re: Want to run a cron job at reboot. Sometimes.

I would create a file via the weekly cron, then reboot the pi. The startup script checks for the existance of the file (dont create it in /tmp !!!) then do the backup. The script has to then remove the file after the backup has completed. This way if the file has not been created and it "just" a reb...

There are some of the disk utilities which might be able to help. Yesterday I used Nortons, but it costs real ££££ I have used shareware to rescue camera SD cards due to corruption.

Re: sending email from the command line

You have to be careful about the domain you are sending FROM. I use exim as the Mail Transport, so I am unable to help, but I do not use smarthost. As spammers use bad FROM fields and use badly configured devices to route their mail.

Cron is the daemon which runs, you tell it via the table crontab when to run your command/scripts.

crontab -l
And
crontab -e

Do you mean to run them ? If the Pi is on the network the enable ssh and use a pc or tablet or smartphone to log into the pi.

If not then type carefully :lol: :D

Re: Fundamental Automation Question

And if the above scares you, then tell us how you will wire it, like usung the gpio to switch relays. If you are doing this then basic scripts can automate most general on / off tasks.

Other threads have how a web page can swap things on an off.

Good luck.

Re: Search all Raspberry Pis in my local network!!

Ping all the IP addresses, and check the MAC addresses for the first 6 hex characters. Thats about the easiest way. You could also ping the local broadcast adress (X.X.X.255) or simply 255.255.255.255. The last one is your local network, whatever private addresses are used. You'll get replies from ...

It could need the full path to the "exec" command. Or run a batch file which calls this, which contains some debug. I'd give you en example but I am at work and cane "see" my rPis.

Using your URL supplied ... try changing the line

_IP=$(hostname -I) || true

to

_IP=`wget -q -O - http://icanhazip.com/ | tail`

and it should work :)

are there any messages in the log ?

sudo tail -n 50 /var/log/messages | more

the numner 50 might need to be changed to get more than the last lines.

My guess is that the BT is not just cancelling itself, but anything in the USB. I might not be able to help more, but i know where to look :)

Yes, its possible. Make sure that your hardware is supported... or "just try". I had a google at "debian netbook" as the Pi runs Debian. See http://www.waltzballs.org/other/linux/eee.html

When to boot up to the CLI and the wireless is down, then can you get to it and type in "sudo ifconfig" My ethernet only shows [email protected]:/home/pi# ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr b8:27:eb:19:d7:61 inet addr:192.168.0.5 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTI...
