Re: Backing up image for trial and error?

Making images over the network is described at places like this http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-copy-compressed-drive-image-over-network.html I am not sure about making a consistent image of a mounted partition, however. Then again, if what you need to do is backup certain directories on your dr...

Re: /etc/network/interfaces file

I would do a 'sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.old' before I modified the file. That way, you could look at what is in the .old file if your changes mess things up.

Re: WiPi Configuration help

My raspbian install works quite well using WPA2 security. I have not used WEP in quite a while, so I cannot really help with this. I can say that when I have typed in the WPA code wrong (due to wonderfully stuck keys) that it behaves the way you are describing. It seems that some of the distros that...

Re: warnim after sudo apt-get dist-upgrade?

I can now say that I installed a fresh image of Raspbian (10-28-2012). In that case, 'aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' works fine. I then performed 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get upgrade'. After the update the same aplay command still worked. I then performed 'sudo apt-get dis...

Re: warnim after sudo apt-get dist-upgrade?

Do you know whether your audio originates from alsa? Now that you ask, I do not know. It is clear to me now that the Pi I am talking about seems to only use omxplayer to produce sound and that does not seem to be affected by whether I can get aplay to work. However, I would appreciate making sure t...

Re: Cannot get ssh to work

What does ssh -v say? Are you sure you are using ssh correctly? For example, using the -l option to ensure that you are logging into the 'pi' account.

I do not think that there is enough information for us to help at this time.

Have you made sure that you are communicating with the correct IP address? ssh -v should tell you what IP is being connected to.

Re: have i been scammed by http://raspberrypi.rsdelivers.com

Well, Newark/element 14 now says that it will be shipping in mid-January (so the days of getting Pis shipped on the day of the order may be over). At the same time, the site linked to in the original post of this thread now reports a shipping time of 2 weeks (give or take). I have learned not to tak...

Re: RS & Allied Update #5 (9th Nov)

Where I get concerned is by the attitude of my Allied branch who just won't answer emails (or acknowledge they received them) or process my online RMA request (even if it is to deny it). I too had ordered from RS/Allied, but my friends were getting theirs shipped same-day from Newark/element 14. I ...

When I put the SD card from my rev. 1 Pi into the rev. 2 Pi, it shows much more than 256MB free memory. This implies that it is keeping a constant amount of GPU memory. I do not know if this is right or wrong at this time.

Re: Identifying the Pi over the network

On my network at home I can ping (or ssh if I have that set up on a machine) their hostname.local by default. Just setting a hostname on one machine does not make other machines on the same network necessarily use that hostname. By default, my network requires me to use hostname.local. I can edit /e...

What distro are you running?

I am running debian wheezy and I can ping raspberrypi.local practically out of the box. It just works after I set up the network. I have not tried to ssh in.

Re: Using Raspberry as backup PC

I intend to replace my main server with a Pi. It will need to log temperatures on a 1-wire network, deal with rsync backups and serve media through samba. I have great hopes that it will work, but I do not have certainty. I see no reason to think that the Pi - a rev 1 256 MB version - will not get a...

I am no expert with fstab, but instead of 'defaults' you might try 'rw,auto, user' which might mount the partition automatically on boot as read-write with access given to users.

Good luck.

Re: Suggest to cacti and DS18B20 sensor

I will second that.

If you have temperatures being logged, then rrdtool is straightforward to use to make basic graphs. It can also make much more advanced graphs, but that takes some learning it would seem (since I have not made much progress with it, but then again I have not tried very hard).

Something simple like a darlington array (ULN2803A) and a breadboard may get your motor working without harming your Pi. Then again, I am pretty new at this as well.

Your ubuntu laptop may be easier. You just need to know what device your SD card is (perhaps read this http://askubuntu.com/questions/8351/how-do-i-list-new-drives-so-i-can-partition-and-format-them). If your SD card is on /dev/sdb, then just do 'sudo dd if=raspberrypi_image of=/dev/sdb'. Do not acc...

I am not sure which issue you are working to fix at this time. It has been a while, but I completely cut out failed authentication attempts when I switched the ssh port to 443 (which is normally used for https). When my sshd was listening on port 22 I got several attempts a day. I have a friend that...
