Great info - thanks so much. I'll see what I need to do at the end, but it sounds quite feasible to do either on the underside of the board or around the top.

Having switched to a lower power iron - 15W rather than 30W, I'm having a lot more success than before.

A slightly tongue in cheek topic, but........ I've caused a soldering disaster :-( my 22nF capacitor destined for position C13 has disappeared into a blob of solder waste, and in one of my failed attempts to tidy up, I think I've ripped one of the connection pads off the board. I especially identify with the plug in and go thing - I've never really worked out how to code anything on a PC - it always seemed like too many steps and stuff to be installed and configure...
