Huge variations in write speed to USB3 thumb drive

Hello All, I bought a new USB3 256G thumbdrive. On my PC (Win7) hdtune says it reads/writes 170MB/sec. CrystalDiskMark says 139.6MB/sec seq. read & 117.9MB/sec seq. write Then the drive got formatted ext4 and put on the RPI. Testing write speed 'dd' with 10x 1MB block I get hugely varying result...

Minimal mail setup

Hello All,

I don't want to set up mail to use the RPI as my global mail tool.

Occasionally I get the system telling me :

Code: Select all

You have new mail in /var/mail/gottsch
And I want to just see what it said. What is the most bare bone mail setup with its sole purpose to tell me these messages?

Thanks,
Gert

Slow performance of USB3 HD on RPI4 via smb

Hello All, I have a Toshiba 4T disk via USB 3 on my RPI4 which is networked (via cable) through router to my Windows 7 PC. I get pretty poor performance on files as seen from windows. Performance on the RPI is not very convincing either. Mount info: /dev/sdb2 on /media/usbdisk4t type fuseblk (rw,nos...

That's what I meant. Clicking OK I can proceed. The USB drive works fine after that.
Just wondering what's the issue of the popup.

RPI3 which USB port to use?

Hello All, @Admin : not really a troubleshooting question, but I wouldn't which other department to put this. Is there any circuit based understanding of which of the 4 USB ports on an RPI3 is 'preferable' ? Sometimes on PC boards you'll read that certain ports are connected to the CPU via different...

Re: fstab to use machine name rather than IP for windos samba share

@hortimech & list Yes, that is all possible and will fix the mount issue. However the win7 box is getting DHCP from the router. So the 141 address is kind-of random. Yes, that can be dealt with by telling the router to give the same IP# to the MAC address every time. I was looking for a more ele...

fstab to use machine name rather than IP for windos samba share

Hi all, I have a win7 machine using the workgroup methodology to connect to other windows boxes and a few RPIs. Hi rpdom, Add your user to the "dialout" group. sudo usermod -a -G dialout gottsch Log out and back in again for it to take effect. Thanks! That is working fine now. There was a comment in another discussion that changing the group setting is not recommended for security reasons. https://w...

Headless PI via VNC low color resolution

Hello All,

Running a RPI3 headless via wifi on VNC seems to severely cut the color palette.

The same screen looks OK on wired network cable.
Any idea what's going on? Is my wifi that bad?
