The RPi Foundation has the purpose mentioned above. I suspect they are able in part to make RPi's, especially at the start, because of discounts and other forms of good will from manufacturers from an expectation it was for that defined purpose. Those manufacturers probably aren't keen on seeing tho...

The Pi's HDMI can be finicky. In Raspbian (hopefully this is somewhat useful here), if the Pi doesn't see an active HDMI, it switches to Composite AV type video which lets you run a Pi on an old style TV using RCA style cables. How about the read-speed? Is that degraded also? Have a B+ using Samba on a Ext4 Partition on a 2TB Seagate external desktop drive (has its own power supply). Local dd command reports a 27 MB/s write speed for a 1 GB file On my Windows 8 machine, writing to the share with CrystalDiskMark Utility reports slightly over 0.3MB/s. A windows copy report...
