Re: Simple Pi Rack 3

Having decided on the PSU and knowing the dimensions of the other major parts, and the rack itself, we can make some decisions on the layout of the bottom layer to avoid problems with wire and connectors. Have decided on the following layout: DSC06228_640.JPG This shows the PSU, relay switch, contro...

Re: Simple Pi Rack 3

I had a slight set-back with obtaining the same switching power supply as the original rack, which I particularly liked for its dimensions (this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00GWFDZSQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), took some time to find and test another (settled on this o...

Re: My Poket Pi project, using a glasses case.

Nice, neat, easy to carry in a jacket pocket and pull out when needed. What's the battery and how long can you get out of it between charges?

Re: Simple Pi Rack 3

On thinking about adding the internal Pi, relay and power supply to the rack, concluded that the bottom level was too flimsy, so added an additional layer of twinwall, with the channels running length ways: DSC06229.JPG and from underneath you can see the cross ply effect, a lattice of polycarbonate...

Re: Simple Pi Rack 3

Eventually the correct positioning was found, and along with a cut-down jack in the sound port acting as a supporting peg, the arrangement is square and true and the Pis can easily be slipped in and out with no problems:

Re: Simple Pi Rack 3

The frame of the rack was constructed from some off-cuts of twinwall polycarbonate, the kind of stuff now being used for garden cold frames and greenhouse glazing. I started with a single top and bottom sheet help separate by 6M nylon studding, joining screw plastic ends, nylon nuts and washers (all...

Hi Stuart, As I posted to Simple Pi Rack 3 . I'd love to get one of these together for you, somehow! I'll be posting images with short descriptions of how this one is constructed, and hopefully you'll appreciate the effort that went into it and why it took time to put together. I really enjoyed doin...

Re: Simple Pi Rack 3

Gerd, I'm glad you appreciate the work that's went into it. You make a very good point about the switch, I think my concerns with 1 Gbit switches were around power, size and weight. At the time I started this I don't think there were any 1 Gbit switches at 5V, they are always a fair bit larger overa...

Re: Simple Pi Rack

Just to let readers of this forum topic know that the Simple Pi Rack has now been substantially redesigned and incorporates a PSU and relay switch as suggested by BMS Doug (discussed in the topic Simple Pi Rack Mk II ), an enclosing case and a number of others features. A new forum topic has been ad...

Re: Simple Pi Rack Mk II

Have now put together a rack for the Raspberry Pi 3, incorporating BMS Doug's power PSU and relay switch suggestions, and a number of other enhancements. Started a new forum topic at: Simple Pi Rack 3.

It now neatly fits within a shoe-box and can be transported easily!

Simple Pi Rack 3

Hi, Below are images of the latest in the Simple Pi Rack line (following on from Simple Pi Rack and Simple Pi Rack Mk II ). The Simple Pi Rack 3 features a set of six Raspberry Pi 3 on top and one embedded. The embedded Pi is connected via GPIOs to a SainSmart relay switch, which is used to switch p...

Re: Watch the birdies

Hi Pidgeon,

I like the name - appropriate!

The WAP is about 20 metres from the wireless dongle. There is a lag between capture and the image appearing of maybe 5 seconds or so, but no more than that.

Re: Simple Pi Rack Mk II

I don't have any experience with the particular flash drive and wifi dongle you mentioned, but I've had 7 SanDisk 16GB flash drives connected to that particular rig (1 per Pi) without problems, though admittedly not trying to stress test it in any way. I have had experience of wifi dongles and singl...

Re: Simple Pi Rack Mk II

Now added on-off and reset switch to the power layer of my Simple Pi Rack, using a cheap and otherwise worthless Mobilizers USB power hub, which are extremely badly made, but have on-off switches mounted. Re-purposed the on-off light hole to hold the PC reset switches, and connected up to the Plugab...

Re: Simple Pi Rack Mk II

Yes, I think this should be good! At the time I started there were no multicharger products like this, and so went for the Plugable 7 port, because it had the required number of ports at full USB 3.0 power spec, and I must say it has coped admirably. However, I'm really just using it as a powering d...

Re: Simple Pi Rack Mk II

Thanks for sharing Luke. You're rack is looking good, but I can see like me you're struggling with the stiffness in USB cables and those clunky connectors. I wish I had a cable making facility, where I could make noodle cables to any desired length and with small and flexible connectors. I've also b...

Re: Watch the birdies

The earlier instructions do cover this. In particular, on the receiving side the following command should still be running i.e. not timed out, waiting for the connection from the sending side: nc -p 5001 -l > buffer | /opt/vc/src/hello_pi/hello_video/hello_video.bin buffer also, make sure you supply...
