Control 56 servos with the Raspberry Pi & the PiXi add-on...

Hi everyone, In the run up to launching our PiXi Kickstarter project, we got distracted trying to create something interesting. A while back we showed how it was possible to control 12 servos directly with the PiXi add-on but we always knew we could do more. Having recently seen several examples whe...

Re: Consider adding a FPGA to a new model?

In the interest of education, creativity, flexibility, and coolness... would you please consider adding a FPGA to a new model of the Raspberry Pi (or whatever a new device might be called)? I would think that having a FPGA mixed in with GPIO on a full featured, Linux-ready computer would make for a...

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

It's taken a while (as you can see from when this topic first started...) but we're pleased to announce that the latest version of the PiXi (2.0) is finally here! http://www.astro-designs.com/pixi-200_gallery.html Following our raffle at the Oxford Raspberry Jam earlier in May ( http://raspberryjam....

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

Nearly forgot - if you're near Oxford (UK) and can get to the Oxford Raspberry Jam on the 15th May, one lucky attendee will win a PiXi (once they're in and tested...)

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

Something we did a little while ago was to try to demonstrate how the PiXi could be used to control a Lego robot that used Lego Mindstorm NXT sensors & servos. We took such an example to the Oxford Raspberry Jam back in February but only recently got around to creating a quick YouTube video and docu...

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

The schematics for the original prototype PiXi-200 (1.1) have been released and can be downloaded from either GitHub ( https://github.com/astro-designs/pixi-200/tree/master/board ) or http://www.astro-designs.com/downloads_pixi.html . There are also Autocad compatible files for the mechanical design...

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

It's been a while since I last posted, ok it's been a very long time... so I thought it was about time for a quick update on the development of the PiXi add-on board. Firstly, it's still going strong, despite a huge delay while we gathered our thoughts, not to mention having to work on the day-job w...

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

Just "discovered" your board and I want the new one! Do you ship across the pond?
That's the plan, we've had interest in the PiXi-200 from all around the world so we'd very much like to be able to support that interest and ship world-wide.

Regards,

Mark

Re: Problem with vsftpd - "553 Could not create file"

Hi everyone, Firstly, my appologies for not replying sooner, i've missed a pile of emails and all sorts of things to do relating to the Pi and the PiXi-200 over the Christas period, i'm only just 'recovering'. Thankyou to every one who responded, it was found to be a permissions thing in the end. As...

Re: i2c repeated start transactions

Hi all, We got stuck on this too while testing the PiXi-200 add-on board. I hope to be able to find a solution where the I2C can be 'tweaked' through the FPGA we have on the PiXi-200 before the I2C bus gets to the MMA7660 or MAG3110 we have on the board. In our case the FPGA works as an I2C 'switch'...

Re: Problem with vsftpd - "553 Could not create file"

Hi Did you set the vsftpd user?... I think you're on the right track there - thanks. I tried putting the file into the folder presented in the ftp client after the connection was established (/home/pi) and that worked. So I need to add a user called pixi now... either that or i can work from the pi...

Hi Joan, thanks for your reply, Permissions is what I was thinking too so i'm glad to hear someone else has the same thought. I'm trying to place a 123kB file into a subfolder within /home, "/home/pixi/" to be more precise. I've tried smaller files, they also fail. I've tried placing a file in /home...

I can browse folders, ftp files off the Pi but when I try to ftp to the Pi I get a response: "553 Could not create file, critical file transfer error" I'm running the Rasbian Wheezy O/S, probably from one of the f...

Latest update... Woohoo! - Christmas came early and the boards arrived early yesterday as hoped. So far it looks good. Hello All! The PiXi-200 project is moving forward. I recently took delivery of a sample of the bare PCBs so I took the opportunity to pop a few connectors on one of them and take some pictures to help illustrate what it'll look like and how it connects to the Pi. If you're interested in looking at a...

I haven't... But then I have years & years worth of experience with Xilinx & Altera FPGAs and haven't even heard of the IvanSense part or AK8975 so I went with what I know best. You can do anything with a Xilinx anyway... :D

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

Hey Mark, Out of curiosity, is there a reason you went with the older Spartan 3 device instead of, say, xc6slx9 for a similar price point? Has more resources/performance (including DSP slices and hard memory controller). Packaging issue? Hi. The reason was cost, I got a better price from Xilinx on ...

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

Hi John, I opted out of the SPI flash configuration option - or any configuration option that put the storage on the PiXi board, for two main reasons. Firstly cost but secondly because through force of habit (in my day job) I tend to opt to use a local processor to configure an FPGA because in 9 tim...

Re: Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

Cool ... seems like its aimed at quadcopter type applications ... what sort of things do you imagine it being used for? Is it an expansion board or would it require the Pi to program and then run autonamously afterwards? Would replacing the 1K EEPROM with a 512K EEPROM cost much more or cause probl...

Introducing the PiXi Add-on board

Hi, I'd like to open up a discussion on a board that i'm working on that I hope may be of interest to others out here. It's called the PiXi Board because its main component is a user programmable Xilinx FPGA. I started to develop the board partly for my own project which is slow-scan astronomical ca...

Re: Xilinx FPGA expansion anyone?

I would love to play with fpga expansion, not something I have ever worked with before, so I don't really have much to say. Only thing I can think of is that I hope the board would minimise impact on other I/O (i.e. still allow i2c and spi to function as normal). I would definitly buy one at $35 (u...
