I'm having the same problem, but I cant fix it... you said: "I had to pull the power and amend cmdline.txt to boot my back up copy of wheezy to get at the file system to fix the problem." any help??? A network port is only open if a software application opens it. There's nothing 'built-in' that will prevent a port from being opened and made available to anything that can address it.

Does the windows machine go to sleep? It sounds as though the session is dropping and failing to reestablish itself, possibly after a network blip. The output from dmesg will probably show a thread repeatedly timing out.

Have you disabled the cron job that you mention in the op? If not then you're not comparing like with like and may end up writing off the wireless connection unnecessarily.

Use dmesg to list kernel messages and look in /var/log/sys log after the mount has become unresponsive - there may be some clues there.

Can you still ping the remote machine when the mount has stopped responding? This would rule network problems out (or in).

It's not clear what your remaining problem is.

You say it works with the ethernet but not without. Since you are bridging the wireless connection to ethernet, how would you expect it to function without ethernet?

What error messages are you still receiving?

It's getting a permissions error when creating the interpreted byte code email.pyc - do you have permission to create a file in the directory you're using?

It might be useful to post the issues that you are still seeing. What have you done to investigate any problems with the driver? Use command lsmod to see if the kernel has got the driver loaded. ifconfig and iwconfig could also be useful to show the current state of the wifi adaptor and network.

You may have a conflicting dhcp server running. One of the commands you mention was diagnostic, not a fix. What was output after you entered: dpkg -l | grep dhcp ? That command is intended to find any installed packages with dhcp in the name, the other command is intended to disable the dhcp server.

It gives a tree that you can navigate through sorted by directory size. You'll never go back to plain old du.

The -x switch excludes files on other devices (mounted usb drives etc.)

(you may need to apt-get install ncdu if you don't already have it)

Just pull the power. Doing so carries a very small risk of corrupting the data on the sd card but since yours is already duff you have nothing to lose. You will never damage the pi itself by pulling the power while it is running.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but ntfs is so bad on Linux that it really isn't worth the hassle. You will get better overall performance from formatting the partition as native linux (ext4) and accessing it from windows as a shared network drive (samba/cifs) to transfer your files, no mat...

Issue a mount command manually and see what error you get:

sudo mount /mnt/data

Also consider giving up on ntfs altogether. It has very poor performance on Linux and should only be used if you need to share the physical drive with a windows machine.

dd would be a terrible choice since it copies the entire disk, including all unused space, and you would then have to resize the partition and file system. rsync would be a better choice, although straight forward cp would also work if both devices are attached directly to the pi.

How do I create/specify the boot and root partitions? I have not seen any tutorial mention this before, this is probably what I'm missing.
