Re: Please try updated Scratch .deb (Debian/Rasbpian)

The "further fix" is just updating your Raspbian to latest using apt-get update and apt-get upgrade
Thanks - have just done it. Sound certainly working, will let you know about stability.

Thanks again everyone for their work.

Re: Please try updated Scratch .deb (Debian/Rasbpian)

Hello, Sorry, I only found this post last week so I've only just downloaded the update. (I just ran the command in the first post in the thread). We then had a good play with Scratch for a couple of hours - it's certainly got the sticky-keys "fix" in place, and general performance seems noticeably q...

Re: Sticking keyboard Bug

Sorry, that sounds like it may be a different problem. The bug discussed in this thread is specific to Scratch, and also happens on some Linux versions of Scratch too. The "workaround" above involves a change to the script that starts Scratch and sets its environment up for it. That workaround seems...

Re: Is Scratch really viable on Raspberry Pi?

I think what we(me and the other Scratch dabblers) need to do is to forget about waiting for "Them" (Scratch MIT/Foundation) to put together all the little mods we've come up with and try and make a simple installable script that setups up a Raspbian RPI with the best current working Scratch that w...

Thanks ked - like simplesi, I'll test this as soon as I get a look-in on the Pi - maybe later this weekend.

Thanks for the work.

Re: Is Scratch really viable on Raspberry Pi?

It difficult as at least 2 out of three of the problems you describe are actually Scratch problems rather than Raspi problems, so should really be fixed by the Scratch people. Not sure about the sound issue though. Agreed. I did offer to help (I'm a C/C++ programmer by trade), but of course nothing...

Re: Is Scratch really viable on Raspberry Pi?

Have you posted that fix to the Scratch people for investigation? Yes, I reported it at http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=1416155#p1416155 - (my workaround is a post number 8 on that thread, and in post 9 I reported that the same problem occurs on other Linux builds but not Windows) -...

Re: Is Scratch really viable on Raspberry Pi?

While we're making sure things haven't got lost in the noise, can I remind people about the "sticky keys" bug and workaround. (In short - on the RPi, but also other Linux builds of Scratch, if two keys are pressed at once, one of them gets "stuck down" until it is pressed again, which makes many gam...

Re: Scratch locks up? (when playing sound?)

I hope they can find the bug and fix it soon. It's too random for teaching purposes in my opinion. Agreed, to a point. There are certainly a few problems that need to be fixed, specific either to Scratch on Raspberry Pi or on Linux in general. I've got 3 threads on the Scratch MIT forum (links at t...

Re: Sticking keyboard Bug

PS to experts - where is the real file - is it at /usr/bin/scratch or /usr/bin/X11/scratch ? On my Ubuntu system, and I assume the Pi is the same (can't get to the Pi at the moment, son's on it) the entire X11 directory is a link to /usr/bin. i.e. the contents of /usr/bin/X11 are identical to /usr/...

Re: Scratch locks up? (when playing sound?)

Some more information about this one, which I will also cross-post to the Scratch forum at MIT. I often run Scratch from a command prompt (i.e. start a command prompt and run 'scratch' from there). I have noticed that when using sound in Scratch, as well as getting the 'locking up' problem, there is...

Re: Sticking keyboard Bug

More info: This turns out to be a problem with Scratch on Linux in general, NOT specific to Raspberry Pi. I've just replicated it on Scratch running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on an Intel desktop PC, so we can definitely get Raspberry Pi voltage issues out of the equation once and for all... Also, the same...

Re: Sticking keyboard Bug

One step closer to finding out what the problem is - and also, this is a far easier temporary workaround for people in the meantime. In the file /usr/bin/scratch, line 97 reads: [ -z "$LC_ALL" ] && export LC_ALL="$LANG" Commenting that line out (by putting a # at the start of it) makes the sticky-ke...

Just need a bash guru to go through it and tell us what's happening :) Simon I didn't get time last night (too busy writing my first Lunar Lander with my son) - will have a look in my lunchbreak today though. Re: Scratch locks up?

Although I've not confirmed it yet, there seems to be a strong correlation between this problem occurring and using sound in Scratch programs. If I don't use any sound, I don't seem to see this problem - as soon as I start putting sounds into the program, this problem starts to happen every few minu...

Re: Scratch locks up?

Just confirming I've got this same problem now. Not sure what's changed, but in the first half hour of using the Pi with my son, it locked up 4 times. Pretty hard to explain to a 6 year old why you're just going to kill the session again, and have to redo the last few minutes' work again. I have run...

Re: Progress on the 3 main Scratch issues

Yes, the problem still occurs in Scratch running on the latest (2012-09-18) distribution. To clarify, the problem only occurs in Scratch - it doesn't seem to be a problem in other applications running under the Pi. Also, it doesn't occur when running Scratch under Windows (haven't been able to test ...

Likewise, I'm interested to hear of any progress with these 3 problems, and I have offered to try and help, time permitting. I am a C/C++ programmer by day, but I have no specific knowledge of either Scratch under the hood, or the VM it runs on (Squeak?). In another thread, I think 'ked' offered to ...

Likewise - now I've got my head around the fact that a lot of this is volunteer effort, I'm happy to help, time permitting.
