Just as a follow up to this, I can confirm Chadderz' suspicions that the extra instructions had the effect of moving the framebuffer address. I could achieve the same results simply by changing the notorious .align statement, so .align 12 did not work at all .align 4 worked so long as the HDMI caple...

I've had a fair bit of trouble getting this to work. I got over having to replug the hdmi cable by setting the alignment of the framebuffer request to 4 (rather than 12) and explicitly writing zeroes into the unused locations, though I'm not sure which of those made the difference.
