Re: Update Python 3?

You can install later versions of pythons by adding PPA repositories and then doing an update and installing the specific version you want. I will say though that I nearly hosed my system messing around with the Python installs. It's because Python is used very heavily by the system and so if you co...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4: operating temperatures

In line with my previous question, what can I do to generally make my Raspberry Pi run cooler? The only purpose it serves for now is running the Unifi controller software 24/7. I've currently set the fan to kick in at 65C and as such it kicks in a lot... I don't know which processes are running in ...

Re: raspbian or ubuntu 20.04 64bit

I started with Raspian 32bit when I first got my Pi4b 8gb. I was not very impressed with it, and I wanted 64bit to better utilize my ram. So I got Ubuntu 64bit 20.04 and saw immediate improvement - for instance, scrolling in Firefox had been jumpy before but now it was smooth. I tried all the deskto...

It should work but you might need a powered USB hub because the Pi doesn't always have enough power on the USB ports.

Losing network connectivity

Sometimes after a few days, the wifi on my Pi4 stops working, with Ubuntu 64bit 20.04. From time to time I have NordVPN running. When this happens, I have not been able to figure out how to restore my network other than rebooting. I try cycling the wifi, and that doesn't help. I also run commands li...

Re: X11 xming - send display over to PC automatically?

I personally used xRDP for this and connect to the Pi using the standard windows RDP protocol. It was easier than using VNC as it did not require any particular configuration for me. You might look here for reference: https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-install-xrdp-on-ubuntu-20-04/ That looks more in...

Re: sudo privileges in Xrdp session

You might want to check /etc/xrdp/sesman.ini and see if there is any AllowRootLogin setting.

For reference, you could see here:

Re: Automount mounts as root on some drives

Ok, I am pretty sure I was able to fix this myself by adding this line to /etc/fstab:

UUID=1E13-214C /media/ubuntu/1E13-214C vfat dmask=000,fmask=111 0 0

I got the UUID by:

sudo blkid /dev/sdc1

Still, it would be nice to not have to do this for every single drive I use.

Automount mounts as root on some drives

I am using Ubuntu 20.04 64 bit on the Pi. Some drives mount as root when I plug them in. This happens automatically. Other drives mount as my user account. The problem with mounting as root is that my user only has read access to the drive and it's tedious to change the permissions, and some operati...

Power Supply For Argon One

I have the Pi 4b with original power supply. I am getting the Argon One case. My question is whether I should upgrade to the Argon power supply. The Argon power supply is slightly more powerful, at 3.5amp rather than 3amp from the original. I know I could probably get by with the original supply but...

Re: Bricked two different RPi 4 - why?

My concern is about your powered USB hub. You have to be careful about hubs that "back power", meaning they feed current to your Pi. This could potentially damage the Pi.

The latest Thunderbird mail/rss is currently the beta version 80.0b4. I have not been able to figure out where or how to get this for the pi4. I am running Ubuntu 64bit 20.0.4. I have Thunderbird, but I am stuck with the last ESL version, which is 68.10.0 (64-bit) and I want to use the latest versio...

Re: How do I install uSB 3.0 Drivers I have a USB hard drive that isn't showing up on pi4

The Kernel's log might provide a good insight on the problem. Although a power problem seems most probable. I usually do dmesg and look in /var/log/syslog These do provide some diagnostic but the errors seemed more symptomatic and not descriptive of the problem. My next move is to make sure there i...

Re: How do I install uSB 3.0 Drivers I have a USB hard drive that isn't showing up on pi4

I have the exact same problem. I have a USB3 drive and it will not work with the Pi any way I have tried. My Pi runs Ubuntu 64bit. I am using the official Pi power supply with the Pi4b/8gb model. I can plug the drive into my Windows PC and my Debian laptop and it works fine. I tried different format...

SD card: Do I have a bad unit/hardware flaw?

The only SD card that I can get to work with my pi4 is the one that came with the device. I have tried four other cards and none of them work. The card sizes were 32,64,128gb sizes, which should theoretically work based on what I've read. It seems incredible that the device should be so picky about ...
